I just recently turned 18 and I'm a Junior in High school, well anyways I have a low GPA(Grade Point Average)from Freshman year that has improved little since despite doing fairly well grade wise in every subject except math(which I failed a year of)and foreign language. So I was thinking with all of this and the possibility of me not getting into a good college, I was thinking about possibly joining the Corps or the Army, For a number of reasons number one first and foremost being I yearn for a chance to serve and defend my nation and it's flag. Two I think it would best equip me with the discipline and organization to carry on with my studies. Three , it is quite possible that I can pursue college credits and even degrees while serving.four I think the educational benifets service would offer me would get me further in terms of this despite my parents offering to pay for college for me.
However my parents are quite opposed to me joining any military branch.
In addition I have ADD and a learning disability in math, however I have been off medication for about two years and a year is the military's minimum in regards to this.
So I was wondering with this in mine I was wondering if the Marine Corps is right for me?
I also apologize if my statements have been too general.
I was sort of in your same shoes when I was in high school. However, my problem was motivation. The Marine Corps helped me solve that little problem; to say the least.
I didn't have the ADD problem. You might want to get into the "joining the Military" forum and ask about the ADD issue. Some one in here may be able to help though. Good Luck.
Kevin, First off, welcome to the Wannabe Forum. Since you are brand new I will recommend that you go here. Alot of your questions have been asked and answered. Click on the magnifying glass above, and do a search for some of those topics. After you have done some research, come back and ask questions to clear things up.
I'm also very anxious about getting literature about joining as my parents would flip on me( I can predict as they threw away recruiting cards and brochures I got in the mail and they submitted a request to my school to keep me off recruiters mailing lists).

Find the thread "To parents of Future Marines", print it out and give it to them.

When I told my mother that I was joining the Marines, she said, "What, are you crazy." Your parents may be worried about you.
SCMerle has a good suggestion. I would do what he says and let them know that this what you want to do.
Also I think my Dad will be disappointed quite alot since he seems to be investing alot of time and effort in terms of preparing me for college. Such as having me visit all these colleges and pushing me to do all these programs and such
However when you do the research I'd say his effort isn't in vain as I think the Corps will help me build on this and help me once I finish my term of service. That's another reason why I think it this is a good idea.
SC and Bio are steering you straight Kevin. Your Father is really doing his job well in trying to keep you focused on college because he only wants the best for you. Give the man the benefit of the doubt and tell him man to man what your plans are. Even if he doesn't like what you're saying, he'll respect you for bringing it to him.
Stop screwing around with your school work as there is no room in today's Marine Corps for lazy uneducated people. The Corps will only help you find whats already inside of you, not put it there. Get to work because you'll not only need your education, you'll actually put it to use. The life you save may be your own - or the Marine's standing next to you. Heaven have mercy on you if you don't because your own conscious won't.
There's nothing wrong with getting a little college before you enlist, also. My mother wasn't happy about me joining and talked me into getting at least two years of college first.
