What kinds of responsed did you get when you decided to join?

Lately I've been surprised with how many people, mostly family members, appreciate that I am joining.

When I went to my great uncle's this past Saturday for Christmas, I had a guy that I didn't know particularly but had seen before say "thank you for serving." After that I just said, "well, I haven't served yet."

At my oldest brother's wedding, my middle brother made the toast and had everyone give me a round of applause for joining and talked more about me than our brother who was getting married. During the wedding while all of us were dancing, I was dancing next to a woman who looked at me and said, "wow now I can tell people I danced with a Marine." I of course told her that I wasn't a Marine yet.

One more time at the wedding, just before I left, I was asked how old I was and i responded with 19. The man and woman I was talking to were shocked, I don't know why. I had told her that I didn't drink and now she knew why, and her husband responded with, "well if you are a Marine, you can drink anything you want."

I've been hearing things like these lately. I was just wondering if any other Marines or Marine hopefuls had experiences like this.

The first 4 things I plan on doing when I get back from boot are: see my family, see my girlfriend, visit with my recruiter's office, then wear my dress blues while walking around the mall.

Dude, you shouldn't walk around the mall in Blues. If I recall, that's not allowed. Further, it is really lame. I see several new Marines a year chillin in the mall in Blues. After three months in uniform, all I wanted on boot leave was to wear shorts and a t-shirt.

I live in Maryland and most people either tell me that I shouldn't join, I'm ruining my future, I should go to college, wait until the war is over, or ask me if I'm crazy-to which I respond absolutely. Smile

Kiddo, if you want to walk around in the mall with your blues, then have at it.
Hell, your recruiter will probably love you for it.
And when your girlfriend sees all the eyeball action you are getting from the other chicks, then she'll egt jealous and keep you a happy person. Gotta think strategy.
Just amke sure you are wearing them right,i.e. you have all the parts and they are placed properly.

Back to the original subject My teachers think it's a grate ideal. Mom she is nervous. Dad wishes I would have wated to sign up but he is also realy impersonable. Brother who is in the army thinks that I should have gone chair force. Neighbor thinks its grate. Alot of my friends thinks its kick a$$ alot say no way. I even have people who doubt my potential but they are freshmen sophmores and juniors and seniors who arent graduating and will be going to school while im in Parris Island.

Just so you young men/women understand, that all the different emotions and feelings coming from the people that love you is all normal.

Your family is going thru growing pains is what I'll call it.

The biggest thing is when they think of the service at this moment in time is war and that can make people make all kindsa different accusations.

If its what you wanna do they will respect you later no matter what your decision is and believe me they will also be proud.

But as a parent I must say I thought young teenagers would give me grey hairs but in reality no matter what a parents child is doing they are always gonna worry and stress criticise etc.

It is a normal response from someone that loves you and believe me you joining the service is just the beginning of their roller coaster ride.

You will later on in life understand what you put your parents thru as have I.

And thats called growing up and learning to respect your parents for everything you put them thru but also everything they have done for you.

Life is full of difficult decisions and you will never be able to make everyone happy.

My best advice is make yourself happy and in the end that will make the rest of em happy.

Good luck with your choices in life.

the only uniform you're not allowed to wear off base is cammies and pt gear. Go to the bar in blues and see how many free drinks you get. Make sure you have someone to drive your drunk boot ass home Smile

oh ho, if they are brave, then not just any bar.
Walk into an American legion post, especially one that ia away from a Marine Base.
You won't walk away from it, you'll have to be carried.
