I know in the Army they have Designated Marksmans I think? I was wondering if they have something like that in the Infantry for the Marines. Or someone that watches over the squads or platoons? I dont know if they have people that can shoot up to 800 meters? Then I know Scout Snipers shoot from like 800 meters and beyond. Do they have someone that shoots up to that point. Do they actually have Designated Marksmans or anything?

So how do you become one then? Do you just have to have a certain qualification at the range?

Every Marine is a basic riflemen. We do not have designated marksmen. There a three basic badges worn by Marines. Expert, Sharpshooter and Marksmen. Marksmen being the lowest badge earned. You will fire from 200yd, 300yd and 500yd lines. Now if you are referring to Marine Sniper that's a totally different and can be researched in this forum.

Actually there are "designated marksmen". It's somewhat like a sniper, but not really the same as an actual scout sniper.

I researched your statement and I stand corrected. As I have learned a designated marksmen acts as a sniper without all the sniper training, and does use the same type of weapon. Thanks for the info, things have change since 87.

We didn't have DM in the Wing, and my last association with ground was in 1977. Even at Marine Barracks we had a machine gun team but not a DM.

The DM's role is to supply rapid accurate fire on enemy targets at ranges up to 800 meters with a highly-accurate semiautomatic rifle equipped with a telescopic sight. Like snipers, DM's are trained in quick and precise shooting, but unlike the more specialised "true" sniper, they are also intended to lay down accurate rapid fire. Marines use M-14's which are rebuilt at Quantico Marine Corps Base and designated as U.S. Marine Corps Designated Marksman Rifles. The Corps also utilizes an adaptation of the M-16 assault rifle, the Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle (SAM-R).
