I'm joining the Marines and I can't help but notice all these threads about people needing waivers and stuff. Is all this DQ'ing and waivering normal? I used to worry all the time about being DQ'd if I tried to join because I have pectus excavatum (sunken chest). And I wasn't eating right and had bowel problems, but now I'm eating right and that's fixed. I run Cross Country and have been lifting weights for 5 years. Now nothing worries me about getting DQ'd, but looking at all these threads kinda makes me want to worry a little bit...

Well understand WilliamSFR that it's not up to us, but MEPS. Most of the time (I needed waivers for asthma and my knees), if your doctor can provide evidence and you have shown through documentation that you are better, then 9/10 times waivers are granted. But understand that while you might be healed and can run cross country, it is not the same as constant everyday Marine Corps training. Remember our physical standards are high, combat training is extremely demanding. It all comes down to MEPS and the possibility of a condition coming back. Trust me I went through the waiver process and I had to show documentation of my asthma not affecting me anymore and it was pretty simple; plus my doctor wrote a note telling his opinion. Hope this sheds light.

I just don't want those guys at MEPS looking at my chest and just freaking out. Twice a week, we do 3 mile sprints, with 6 to 8 short, fast sprints at the end. Some days we do a timed 3.1 mile run. Some days we do 7-10 mile long distance runs. My chest has never bothered me. I love running ever since I started. Not only do I run at least 5 days a week, I exercise 5-6 days a week, not just lifting weights, but 200 pushups and situps througout my workout, and 50 pull ups. I know I am physically (and mentally able) to do bootcamp. I just hope the doctors at MEPS know it to...

So many Wannabie's think we have some type of pull at meps or in the recruiting world, well we don't. Quite often I will leave a smmrt @$$ comment like we missed this weeks recruiting briefing. All we can do is point someone in the right direction and let them do it, somethings in life you have to do on your own.. Your doing geat running and doing the PFT stuff ahead of time, that will help you. Boot Camp is not just about PFT's, 1st phase is to weed out those may not make it all the way, body and soul.

Is there anything about cuts or burns? I have a nasty scar on my right bicep from getting cut by metal a year ago. About 3 years ago I got burned on my wrist area from falling on a grill. Are scars DQ'ing?

None of those things you said should get you dqed. A lot of these people with waivers are for breaking the law. I think you will make an excellent Marine, go speak with the recuriter get your Physical setup and you will be good.

The two MEPS I work with require a 2 mile run time on most applicants with pectus excavatum. If you have a school newspaper or some such item with your 5k run time from x-country on it, I would bring that to MEPS. It "may" help, but remember that the doctors all have varying interpretations of the standards.
Good luck. |

I've put in 2 Marines that have the same thing, sometimes it depends on the depth of the sink and weather the docs think its ok.. both of them are now Marines and successful, dont let it keep you up at night!

Should I put that I had bowel problems 7 months ago on my medical information? Even though I'm cured?

The long and short of it is that you can choose to answer the question however you see fit. If you choose to not list something then that is your choice. If you don't list something and it is found out later you can be processed for a fraudulent enlistment. Again, the choice is yours...we call it integrity. |

Hey Williams SFR...Correct me if I am mistaken. You have previously said you can do 50 pull ups, 200 situp, run 7-10 miles a day, may time a 3.1 timed run. Is that right.
But you say you have a caved-in chest, have a scar on a bicep, which I wuld 'guess' (the bicep and/or arm) are fairly big, since you can do 50 ? pullups etc. By the way is that with a grip or a grasp on the bar? That you'fell' onto a grill. Was that from feeling dizzy after your daily workout? That you also have had a 'bowel' problem. Was that not being able to crap? or what? Not being able to 'crap' can be quite painful and make you feel full of s**t right? I in my days in the Corps have met many who suffered from that. So don't worry OK? One last thing....you ain't s******g us are you? I feel worried about that. |

I meant that I do 200 pullups and situps and 50+ pullups throughout my workout. I don't run 7-10 everday just about 2 days a week. The norm for me is a fast timed 3.1 mile run. |

Oh yeah, I fell on the grill outside because we have cats that love to wander under your feet when you're walking. I was walking in front of the grill and the cat just happened to walk between my feet. I started to trip. Instead of stomping the cat, I made myself fall. I just happened to fall on the grill.

Yeppers, you could be the most physically fit, but still washout because you didn't have the right attitude or frame of mind. |

The reason I even started all this exercise in the first place is because I started wanting to join military. When everybody puss's around, complaining in the weight room because they don't feel like doing the work, I push myself through all the weak talk. Just the 'wanting' to join the marines have made more a person I never thought I could be. It's all motivation. |

Trying to BBQ while drunk is a bi***. PS: Was that "metal" a steak knife. |

That metal was nasty, rusty old scrap from God knows what. I was helping my uncle move tons of scrap metal out of the woods behind his new house. |

And I'm not s*****g you. I'm not a liar. I just start to worry when all this paper work started with medical stuff. But, that's all over now. Everything's signed and everything's gonna be fine. Thanks everybody for the information and all the help! |
