Hi yall, I am dead set on joining the USMC, plan on going to college and doing infantry and really want to make a career out of it. I like target shooting and really shooting anything in general. I also wrestle for my high school and love physical challenges.

If its not too much to ask I just want to know what all the marine marksmanship training consists of- what distances do you shoot from, do use the same type rifle for the whole course, exactly how good must you do to pass, and how does it compare to the other branches' marksmanship training?

Ive searched all I could and the best I got was very vague information.

To give you a brief synopsis, we shoot from the 100, 300 and 500 yard line. Of course, you'll be given classes and instructions on how to adjust for wind and things like that. I was in the Army Reserves before I went active duty Marines. The Army shot from I think 25 yards to 300. Of course I did that in '92 so don't hold me to it. I do remember it being really easy.

The Marine marksmanship training is more involved compared to the other services and you'll have plenty of practice to be successful. I wouldn't worry about it at all. You will use the same rifle. Additionally, you have a field fire exercise where you fire at moving targets and shooting with your gas mask.

Good luck with the infantry officer spot.

Wow, 500 yards without a scope? Must have some good instructors. Whenever the time comes Im really try as hard as I can practice as much as I can to get the highest marksman credntials you can get in the marines. Its not that I want to be a shoot em up sniper or anything I just want to perfect my aim as much as possible and if the need to go to combat arises Id like to know Im a better shot than the enemy is and able to hit them from farther off than they can hit me.

Also, is combat really as bad as some of the people on here make it sound? Seems like its worse than hell. Like does everybody that kills someone in war end up with some type of trauma?

Combat is not fun; combat is not a game.

It is not usually the killing of the enemy that causes problems. When and if you have been there you may start to understand.

Marines are the best shooters in the world, with the best training. It is usually those who think that they can shoot before they join the Corps that have the most problems.

I didnt mean to be a troll or offend anybody and no I am NOT a good shot. Without a scope right now just estimating but the farthest I can reliably hit a bottle from is about 20 yards so I know I have a longgg way to go.

Ive read the book On Killing and the author basically says 98% of everyone that goes in combat comes out with PTSD. Just wanted to see if I could talk to someone thats been there and done that again.

Thanks alot yall I really appreciate the answers.

No need to practice prior to going to Boot Camp, they will teach our way. You will be able to hit what your aiming at and make it hurt..

I advise against asking about PTSD or combat.

I'm attaching an interview that you and other Wannabes should take the time to watch. It's what ground troops are facing these days. The Fog of War.

GREAT video man. If anyone knows, would they be able to give me an estimation or source telling how many casualties the taliban and al qaeda have suffered? Im sure it is well up there because I hear the ground battles and shootouts are all pretty much being dominated by the better equipped and better trained military of ours'.

They have a BOOK on killing???

PTSD is basically anything that changed from before the event took place to after the event took place.
