I guess I missed the part where telling someone to do the right thing - in the face of idiotic commentary like "everyone-screws-up-so-it's-no-big-deal" - is somehow being "condescending" or "browbeating" anyone. If someone thinks lying is the way out, I will tell them otherwise, Period. That's not "browbeating." That's honesty. If it were truly a gang-pile or a slam-fest on an individual who didn't deserve it, I'm pretty sure the moderators would step in. I would worry a lot less about the advice that a youngster gets here, from fellow and former Marines who only say what they do to insure that someone doesn't make an even bigger mistake by lying (and to make sure the Corps. doesn't end up filled with dirtbags) - and worry a lot more about the "everyone" that these people keep referring to, a la "everyone says I should just tell them no..."...or "everyone says they have no way of finding out..." For the most part, people giving advice here have integrity foremost in mind - the integrity of the individual, the enlistment process, and of the Corps. in general. And for the most part, the people seeking that advice understand. So advice is given and, hopefully, taken and understood. But others openly reject that advice in favor of what the aforementioned "everyone" says, and in those cases, you can't sugarcoat it. |

I remember the day i left for boot camp, Oct 2nd 1983, I was at meps standing before a zero and he was telling me he didnt believe I never smoked pot.
This guy started screaming at me telling me every HS kid has tried it, so I can clean and said I had experimented a few times. he gave me a waiver and I was on a plane for SD a few hours later. I also had bad asthma as a young kid, my recruiter said I would be DQ for it and to NEVER mention it to anyone in the military again, so I didnt. The moment of truth was hell for me because I so wanted to come clean about the asthma but I followed my recruiters advice. I graduated boot camp went home and went to see my recuiter, found out he had been fired as a recruiter for fraudulently elisting recrutes. I enlisted with a ZM contract which was at the time security forces-which meant after ITS a 2 year stint wither at a Marine Barracks or on a ship with Sea Duty, I got Sea Duty, 2 years on a battleship, then finished out my contract with a line company A 1/5, Then did a bit of time in the reserves before calling it quits for good. Now I dont know what kind of security clearence we had while on Sea Duty, but we did have nuke tipped Tomahawks and the MARDET was in charge of the security of those missles, but I never heard 1 thing about my lie about not having asthma. I am not advocating to lie to get in the Marines, in my case I did what me recuriter told me to do, we didnt have chat boards on forums when I went in to get advice like the kids do nowadays, my ONLY contact with the Marines was my recuiter, no internet or anything like that. |

Somewhere between the Drill Instructors Creed, the Battalion Commander's Graduation Address, and a few old MARADMIN's seems the term "boot camp" just got lost. It probably didn't sound professional enough for time.
However, I am familiar with the term and would have used it, but I prefer a more honest or current term. Just trying to be honest. FYI, "recruit training" is still an acceptable euphemism as well. Hope this helps. Also, my profile has been updated for a while. Please feel free to check frequently for the latest bulletin. |

Hello all,
The only thing in life I ever was sure about was becoming a marine. I tell people all the time and they say I'm stupid and am signing up to die, I just brush that non-sense off. Well to get down to the point, I'm a senior and high school and about to go to a recruiter to join up but know reading this I'm thinking I have ****ed my self over. I have done drugs before also Mary J being the most one I have not done that in a while, but the other stuff I have done is bad. I have done cocaine and crystal. I have only done those things once and im scared that if I say that to my recruiter they will not let me join. Will I be able to sign a wavier and go about and join or no? All I want to be is a marine!! p.s. yeah I know I suck at grammar and writing |

MODERATOR, MARINE FORUMS I'm innocent! I'm the John Boy....... |
Tell the damn truth, take your lumps, and you'll sleep much better at night. The best person to ask is a Recruiter. Semper Fi Johnny Blaze If you're gonna shoot, shoot! Don't Talk. |

Thank you for the advice I will ask the recruiter. I always had the intention of telling them the truth.

Hello again everyone I have just made my appointment to join the Marines this Friday. The recruiter asked me if I had used drug and I told him yes about using Marijuana occasionally, I then told him about me using meth and cocaine once. He said if I have ever got caught using by the police or anything for them and I said no. After I told him all that he just said to not mention meth and cocaine, I don't want to lie and risk my future over this. Should I just tell my recruiter to put down my one time use of meth and cocaine.

That's Mr. HollywoodMarine to you. |
Yes, you should. Big Brother ALWAYS finds out, and you will be discharged under fradulent enlistment. If your recruiter tells you to lie, tell him you will speak to his SNCOIC, and report him. |

Hey everyone I just called my recruiter and told him if he could put that I did Meth and Cocaine once. I told him I didn't want to mess stuff up later and he just told me if I never got caught then to not mention it again. I then told him if I had to sign a wavier for smoking weed and he told me no and to just not do it anymore. Should I just go speak with his SNCOIC like HollywoodMarine said, I don't want to lie about my drug use but I also don't want to "snitch" on my recruiter.
forgot to add. My recruiter told me that he used to do all this stuff and he never said anything about it. |
