i can seem to find a straight answer anywhere. some people say you'll end up doing infantry jobs and house searches, others say you'll just be standing in front of gates checking id's. i just want to know if these things are true and if so whether or not mp officers will being doing them or something else entirely.

We are at War, The Marine Corps will use you as needed. Marines work outside of their MOS/Billet constantly, its why we have the term "Adapt and Overcome". When you go to Iraq you will be used to best complete the mission, thats the bottom line.
Things may have changed in a couple years but as an MP after school you find out if you are a field MP or a base MP. Base MP's stay garrison and gate guard as well as patrol in vehicle's. When I was FAP'd (part of that adapt and overcome deal) I learned that the base MP's could not go over to the field side. Just never enough of them. I don't have any first hand experiance from the field MP's.
