So I was originally going to sign for AD but didnt feel like waiting till April to leave for bootcamp so I'm signing for Reserves as an 0311. My recruiter made me aware that I can go reserve for 2 years then switch to active duty after talking to a counselor and finish out my 6 year contract as AD. Is this true? He stated only after 2 years I can switch tho.

I guarantee you that no such switch can or will happen.
Your recruiter, for lack of a better metaphor, would claim you can switch to the Space Marines after 2 years if he thought it would get you to sign the contract. |

Well I already signed and everything. He actually told me after I signed everything. So this switch is impossible?

You would have to fill out a DD 368 conditional release form to bring you to the active component that must be endorsed by your entire chain of command. It is 99.99% likely they will not do so. Reserve infantry battalions particularly are understaffed and they are not going to give you up.
Seems your recruiter has introduced you to the big green weenie. |

Impossible? No. It's been done many a times. Difficult? It all depends on the needs of both the losing (USMCR) and gaining (AD USMC) components. The AD side has to have a spot for you and the reserve side has to APPROVE your transfer request. Like Funkymustafa said your CoC has to endorse your transfer request (i.e. DD-368 Conditional Release). If they feel they need you more, then you're not going anywhere until further notice. If AD is what you want, then you better switch it while still in DEP (more possible than trying to switch while on drilling status). They may give you hell about it, but bottom line is, you can switch contracts in DEP. Anytime after and it will feel like it takes a Constitutional amendment! That's regardless of whether AD is taking reservists or not. Now, (hypothetically) say you're already a drilling reservist and your transfer has been approved for AD; there seems to be no set time for your orders to be cut! You may wait weeks for your orders or you may wait months on end. So, a USMCR to AD USMC transfer is possible, but seems to be COMPLICATED NO MATTER WHAT THE NEEDS OF ANY COMPONENT IS! So what if you have to wait until April? The Marine Corps is not going anywhere. If AD is really what you want, then change that contract ASAP. It'll probably be as complicated as augmenting from USMCR to AD while drilling, but it's less hassel than that. |

You can't wait 9 months to go to boot camp, but you can wait 2 years and 9 months to go active duty? When you want to go active duty all along?
Suck it up and wait the 9 months to get what you REALLY want and don't settle for less because you're too impatient. |

What's sad is that nothing is guaranteed even if AD is taking USMCR augments. Once again for the umpteenth time: the NEEDS of both the losing and gaining components! If the USMCR thinks or really needs you more, then you're not going anywhere until further notice! |
