Basic Training |
If all goes as planned, I will be shipping to PI in a week(June 9th). I will be in 3rd Battalion. I was wanting to get some opinions and insight into 3rd Battalion. Any personal experiences? My friend who graduated RT in the fall said they are in the middle of no where, so the DI's can make your life as a recruit more miserable then the other battalions.
Any info, opinions, and experiences is greatly appreciated. Thanks |

AKA the Thumping Third, known for DI's that are mean and they like to thump the Pvt's. Look at Gunny Irwin, look how ugly he became and he was in the Third. I was Plt 3011 I Company.....

You have smaller platoons compared to the other battalions, you get a little more "personal attention" I'm lost, I thought we were macho!!lol 3032 Kilo

3rd battalion has the reputation for smoking you the worst/hardest, or so they say.
I will say this, whenever I see anyone wearing recruit battalion shirts, it's always that freakin blue 3rd Bn shirt. If you want a story to go with it, about three quarters of the way through boot camp we had a DI from 3rd mysteriously join our platoon, no idea why, disappeared a few weeks later, I guess he was bored or something. Anyway he made our guide do diamonds ranger-style off his footlocker for the entire time it took us to clean weapons. Pretty sure he cried. So I suppose that's what you have to look forward to. |

yes! Thank you. I remember hearing that noise all the time with folks saying how hard their boot camp battalion was. i remember being at MOS school or at a duty station and hearing the boot camp war story that usually started with "No other battalions were as hard as (fill in the blank) battalion" or "Nobody was as hard as (fill in the blank) company." talking all that noise makes you sound like a boot. no offense folks, but you basically all did the same thing. not that that makes you less of a Marine or anything, but it also doesn't make anyone "harder" than anyone else. find me a Ribbon Creek era Marine, or a Vietnam era Marine to tell boot camp horror stories. otherwise, it's pretty much been the same thing for the last 20 years. POOLEE08, boot camp is what you make of it. nobody can tell you what to expect from a particular recruit training battalion. Drill Instructors cycle out just like everyone else. Officers change as well. you never know what kind of crew you're gonna have until you're doing pushups in a pool of your own sweat. all battalions follow the same SOP. (standard operating procedure) all have the same training cycle. all graduate after 12 weeks. you will rappell, do the gas chamber, rifle qual, swim qual, do the crucible, etc. and get smoked no matter who you do boot camp with. best of luck to you. |

I must admit I do admire your zeal Re-cruit Poolee08. While you're obviously super excited about leaving, remember this old joke which will serve you well in life:
The young bull looks at the old bull and says "lets run down the hill and screw a cow!" The old bull turns his head and looks at the young bull with a smile and says "lets walk down and screw 'em all." Slow down Tiger, everything will take care of itself in its own due time. Have fun with these last few precious days of youthful freedom you'll ever know because they'll be gone extremely shortly. You only have one shot at this so make this one week count because its where you'll build a lifetime worth of memories that will put a smile on your face for the rest of your life. Don't do anything stupid, just stop and smell the roses. Dude, I took almost three weeks after high school graduation where I kicked it with my honey, hung with the fellas and had dinner with my folks big time. I wore stylin' threads, went to bed late and woke up late and just lived free before showing up at the yellow foot prints. Like I said, it'll give you a smile just like I'm smiling now when I look back at all that freedom. No one asks any questions or says anything because they know you're enlisting so you have a blank check as long as you don't over do it. Feel me? Live it up dude man. Pretty soon you won't be able to. Screw PT and all this preparation crap, go live your life because you only have one shot at now so make it count. This message has been edited.
