Scroll to the final post for my current status

Hello. Sorry if this is the 100th time reading an MOS thread, but please remember it is my first one Smile

I'm in line for basic marine training 20080619 and have a question regarding MOS. My ASVAB score was 96.

A major reason I chose the armed forces was to gain expertise and experience in a field. I'm math inclined so the MOS I would prefer would be some sort of engineering or programming.

I would like to choose an MOS which would translate easily to civilian employment. One of these examples is Air Traffic Controller. From what I have read, air traffic controller is a demanding position with a good salary (source ). I have an inclination towards any aviation (since airports are everywhere and the current state of homeland security would make any airline embrace a former Marine.) My second choice may be any sort of electronics. What I would like to avoid is an factory assembly line position. Does anyone have recommendations on other MOSes?

I also hear jobs that require Top Secret clearance have better salaries or are more likely to hire someone with that clearance because it is expensive to attain such clearance as a civilian.

I will be sure to discuss this with my recruiter tomorrow (I have just come off oathing and am very tired from a 4AM-5PM MEPS run) but would like more information from Marines who have seen or heard what their peers do in better detail.

I am also curious to know which MOS(es) requires the highest ASVAB scores. Does anyone know? I would like to look into them.

I have some researche to do and this seemed like a good forum. The website I am using is military.about.com

Thank you for reading!

I chose BY, Electronics Maintenance.
From what I understand, depending on my MOS school qualification, this may lead to
21, ordnance
28, data communications
59, electronic maintenance

59 seems to include a lot of air traffic control repair and maintenance. I chose it based on jimnsc. Thank you for the suggestion.

My new boot camp date is May 26, 2008.

If the "BY" program I'm looking at is the same one you saw, you will get one of these: 2171, 2822, 2831, 2844, 2846, 2847, 2871, 2881, 2887, 5937, 5942, 5962, 5963.

Those are some pretty intense Maintenance MOSs. I'm sure Jim would be able to give you insight on the 5900 field.

Today I received three statement of understanding forms. I'd like to link them here for anyone to comment on, but am still looking for them online. They are:

Statement of understanding for
BY - Electronics Maintenance
2100 ground ordnance maintenance
2800 ground electronics maintenance
5900 electronics maintenance
Form number: 1130-BY 01 OCT 07

Statement of understanding for program code
F5 - Electronics maintenance bonus
2100 ground ordnance maintenance
2800 ground electronics maintenance
5900 electronics maintenance
1130-F5 01 OCT 07

Marine Corps college fund for 5/6 year enlistment (addendum to statement of understanding for enlistment services)
Bonnus Type Code:
JH
Form Number 1130-JH 16 OCT 07

I ask here because, even though my recruiter seems like a nice person, a salesman by any other name will still be that.
My main questions regarding this step:
Is this the final contract? (there will be nothing left to sign after?)
How long can I wait to sign this?
Is there a risk in losing any of this if I don't sign by tomorrow? Within a week?

My recruiter tiptoed around how long i could wait to sign. He said he would like to submit it asap to begin processing. I want to be sure this is exactly what I want or as close to what I can get.

I received this after a training session and am just gathering myself. I haven't had time to search e

Also, if anyone has any personal experience with people who have been disqualified from incentives mid school, please share.

Thank you for reading.
