What are some of the things soldiers do during white phase? Also, I haven't heard from my son lately. Would he get into trouble if I contacted his commander?

Zamy mom dont call, he is so busy he will write. On Ft. Benning there is a link to a soldiers journal. It will give you an insight of what his training will be like. Don't call he will get into trouvle. I learned that the hard way. LOL. Its hard. Just write him lots. It takes a week to get to him and when he writes back it takes another week.

The last thing that you want to do right now is call the command and ask why you haven't heard from your son. This will stir up problems within the command and, besides getting yelled out and probably doing extra PT, he will be harassed for the next several weeks about being a "momma's boy". He is an adult now. Just sit tight and wait it out. Melissa is right about the timing. The letter might be in transit right now.

The reason for contacting the commander is my son is on suicide/homicide watch and I haven't heard from him in five days. I need to know my son is ok.

First of all, unless you've been told specifically otherwise, the commander is not the person you call. There is contact information and a chain of command that needs to be followed.

Second of all, if something is wrong with your son, you would find out. No news is always good news where the military is concerned.

I'm new to all of this army stuff. How do I find out chain of command and contact information?

You should have received a piece of paper in the mail shortly after your son went into Basic (assuming he's not married and the info didn't go to a spouse), it's a Welcome Letter and should have a number and/or address to contact if there are any problems. Otherwise you should be able to go to the website for whatever BCT location he's at, look up his battalion, etc., and find contact information.

This puts a different spin on things but, in this case, I would say that no news is good news. You probably will not be hearing from him personally until he gets off suicide watch. Definitely look for the Welcome Letter that you should have received.
