Hi, My son did basic at Fort Jackson and seemed to fail most PT tests. They are timed tests requiring a certain number of situps, distance run, etc., so are fairly taxing. If this is her first one, she will be tested again before too long. She may have extra training time on a certain exercise. But she will just be tested again. At the end of her training in basic or AIT, she will be given an EOC PT test and can't fail it more than twice or its considered "failure to adapt" and can be reason for discharge. Don't be disheartened at this point. Your daughter is in early days with basic and will toughen up. Keep sending cards and letters for encouragement as that is the very best we can give them at this point. Melanie
My husband failed every single test in Basic except for the final one he took 3 days before graduation. He also failed every single diagnostic as well as official test, except for the last one he passed in AIT.
The failing twice and risking discharge would require a very strict command. They've spent a lot of money training that soldier, failing a PT test isn't a great reason to discharge (to a certain extent). It also doesn't look good for the DSs training them that they can't pass. From our experience, both in Basic and AIT you can get recycled and/or added to special population PT, which is specifically for PT "failures", and requires them to work out separately and more often than their regular unit does. They WANT that soldier to pass, and most commands will do whatever they can to make that happen.
But ... those are all total "what ifs" for your soldier since it's the beginning of the game. Failing the first PT test isn't unheard of, because the PT aspect of the military is so unlike what most people do in their regular lives. As Basic progresses, your soldier will lose weight, build muscle and endurance, etc., and may be perfectly fine by the end of training. Like Mom of One mentioned, sends lots of encouragement, and I bet everything will be fine.
