My son leaves July 29th for Basic and then MP training. It maybe possible that they will end up in the same classes. The only thing I know about Ft. Leonardwood is that it's nicknamed Ft. Lost in the Woods. I did a google search and found their website. It is very informative in regards to when and where our boys will be. I will probably use it very often once he is gone. I grew up an Army brat and then married a career Navy guy so I have been around the block a few times. However, it is very different when it is your child. He is my oldest and so this will be my first experience of one flying the nest. Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to point you in the right direction.

My son is a medic. He went to AIT there. He loved it. We're from a small town in NW Montana and San Antonio was his first taste of big city life. He turned 21 there. Both him and the city survived. I do think he had way too much fun.
I went from AF brat to Army wife and now to Army mom.
I'm going to whine now, so skip if you want too. My oldest son left for the Army and my middle son got married within two weeks of each other. We went from a loud, happy house with friends over all the time to just me and my youngest (he's 15). I hate it!!! Everything's so quiet. I'm not adjusting to this well at all.

tommigues - Hi Maybe they will be in the same class. I was an af brat, then active duty coast guard myself. My husband is NG and stepson AR. I will have to look up the website I have map quested it for directions it is thirteen hours from where we are in N.Carolina. My son graduated midterm from High School so now he is just waiting around to go. Unfortunately he can't find a job. I am really going to miss him and it is just really sinking in he won't be home for his birthday or Thanksgiving. And it doesn't help he is always giving me the countdown of how many days he has left till he leaves. I really think he is ready to go now but if he wants MP they said he has to wait until then. He signed for 5 years how long did your son sign for. It will be a huge adjustment for me when he leaves and I will miss him like crazy but being from a military family I am hoping I am prepared.

wenray1221- my son is also on a 5 year enlistment. His recruiter recently told us that since he will go directly to AIT from boot camp that we should wait until AIT is over and then go to that graduation. Have you been told the same? My son graduates High School in May. He has informed me that he plans to fish everday until he leaves. Boy does he have a rude awakening coming, LOL!

Tell me about it mine is sleeping everyday till noon and he is NOT a morning person would love to be a fly on the wall when his drill instructor wakes him up at some ungodly hour. But they will adjust. Yes we are just going to AIT graduation. My husband volunteer for deployment so he may be leaving later this year so then just me my 15 daughter and my dad will drive out for his graduation. I am very proud of him but i am trying not to think about him leaving he and I are very close and it is going to be hard but I am glad he decided to join I think it will make a good man out of him and he will get training and hopefully some college I just hope he gets stationed somewhere close so we will get to visit him. I know the whole experience of the military is to see new places but the mama in me is hoping he get FT Bragg that is only two hours away.

I'm just the opposite about where I think my son should have been stationed. He grew up in Atlanta and wanted to get stationed in Georgia. When his orders came in for Korea, he was mad and I was happy as a pig in slop. The day before he was to fly out the Army changed his orders to Ft. Stewart. Our attitudes swapped completely. Now that he is there, he has seen nothing new except for Baghdad which did not expand his horizons in any good way.

OK now its getting real. My baby leaves one month from today for basic and mp school. On one hand I am ready but on the other It is going to be soooooo hard not to see him everyday. But I know it will be good for him and I am ready for him to get his army career going. This is just mom having a hard time letting him go.

I am so proud of him, it was hard letting him go and his letters are funny that we received part of them state that he wants to come home and the other part you hear the excitement in things to come.

Hello to All, If you would like to read some good information on kids going to FLW please go to the "Joining the Military" forum, Then to "Boot Camp", Then the thread "Letter From Reception". It is stickied on the top. It was started last year by a mom whose daughter went to FLW for MP. She met up with 5 or 6 other moms whose sons were there at the same time. Thru some sharing of info the moms found out that all of the kids were in the same training company and graduated on the same day. Friendships ensued. If you read the thread it will answer about any and all questions that you have about FLW. While you are there feel free to join in and introduce yourself. The moms still post regularly and are very welcoming. My son was at FLW at the same time but 1 month behind. And also in a different MOS. But I chimed in and they made me feel very welcome and I count some of them as friends. The information I gleened was so helpful for what was happening to my son during basic, no matter the mos the basic is the same, but also for the trip to graduation. Hope this helps some. Best to your kids and thanking them for their service. Chuck

My son left this morning. It was the hardest thing to watch him get on that bus. On one hand I am as proud as a peacock that I can say my son left for basic training and then on the other hand I am heart broken that he is gone. He will be an MP once all is said and done.

tommiques, I know how you feel they picked my son up on Sunday. We talked to him last nite his flight was delayed and he got to st louis around 9:30 he was in the uso lounge waiting to be picked up and very happy they had free cookies he was starving lol. I know what you mean I am so proud of him but my heart is breaking too. God doesn't it just seem like yesterday you were giving birth and now all of a sudden they are grown up. It went so fast. I wonder if they are going to be in the same class?

We all sat around last night telling "Josh" stories and it does feel like all of that happened yesterday. Josh flies out of New Orleans tomorrow. It will be nice if they end up in the same class. Maybe then you and I can compare notes. LOL.

We talked to him again last night. They put him up at a hotel on Monday nite in st. louis then brought him back to the airport on tuesday then they waited until about 50 more kids showed up he said they were finally picking him up at 6pm last nite. I mapquested it ...it is still about a 2 hour ride from st louis to the base. He said the uso had been feeding him and he was already making friends. I hope they are together.
