Most post offices will take your applications, however you do need a certified copy of your birth certificate along with 2 photos for your passport. yes it does take 6 to 8 weeks but you can expedite it by paying an extra fee, you can then get it in about 3 weeks. my hubby and i just did that recently so we could go on vacation, it came out to about 300.00 for both passports but well worth it for us.also it's good for 10 years.

Sooooo glad I fell into this site. Passport...who woulda thunk?! I am getting a late start but start I shall. My son leaves in a couple of weeks (translate to Military speak..."or maybe right now") to Iraq and he has been setting things up for me to handle stuff while he is away, but the need for a passport never came up! All I can say is thanks again! I will be 'tuning in' again!

I have always felt gratful that I seem to be on top of the kids needs etc. I never would have thought about passports for me. Thank you so much!
Someone mentioned a list of dos and don'ts. How about a list of common abbreviations. ie: UCMJ. I'm guessing MJ is for military justice. But haven't figured out UC. Thanks everyone, for great ideas and expressing your feelings. It helps me not feel stupid for how I feel.

RE: Passports

Besides my husband and me, will my son who has just joined the Ohio Army National Guard need one as well, or will the military take care of his?

Hi momsand dads..this is such a great site to share such helpful info such as passports. We all have such alot on our minds,we forget the basics.
I had to laugh at the post saying the other sites dont make us welcome
there is always one or two hard guys but those men and women have helped me so much.My son is home now from Iraq, and has ptsd.Let me tell you that it is very hard to deal with.
Any way I just wanted to say that I will keep all of your sons and daughters in my prayers.

just a few bits of info for all of you out there... been there , done that... with my daughter being deployed to Iraq with the Army Nat'l Guard. She was gone for a year and a half and we went through so much paperwork but there is a slew of info available and should be read and the forms used before a family member is deployed. If you go to the Military.com home page and look on the left side of the screen, there is a section that says Deployment Prep. from there you look for the tab half-way down that says "Spotlites" under which you will see the different areas for active duty deployment etc. My advise is to read through all of it. There is different info under each of the tabs whether it be active duty or Nat'l Guard, it all holds information for you. In one of the sections is a group of about 12 pages of info that you can print out and fill in for yourself so that all the info is handy "should" you ever need it! (hopefully not) Also on the home page - hit the Benefits tab on top and then look for "legal matters", from there click on the "legal checklist" for a guide of things to do before deploying! My daughter came home last June and is still dealing with PTSD, and now is waiting to hear if she will be re-deployed this summer again. As a single mom I can tell you, having your only daughter go off to war has its highs and lows. I got through it with ALOT of prayers and alot of support!! I wish all the best to all of you who still have family members over there and I pray for their safe and speedy return home! Smile

Covenanthouse, thank you so much for bringing this reminder to our attention. My son, a Marine, LCpl has been in for a year now and a passport never once came to mind.

I relayed the idea to my ex, his mom.

Thank you again,

Don

Thank you oldgrunt78 for that reminder. I just went in to check mine, and it's expired Red Face
I had heard of a family that didn't make it in time to be with their child, overseas, bec of not having the passports. I will do this Monday morning, and also get my new hubbie to get one also! Tks for the reminder!
I also keep up to date on my "shots" at the NavHos in Newport. They just ask where son is going and give shots that are needed for that area.

Not only is it wise to have a passport but also some funds set aside as well. When my son got hurt and was sent stateside the Army didn't pay for me to travel to the hospital and lodging expenses. I was also never reimbursed. Without that money that I set aside I would have never been able to see him due to high cost of last minute flight and hotel reservations.

Many major hospitals have Fisher Houses close by. They are like Ronald McDonald houses and you should be able to stay there if a room is available. That can help keep the expenses lower for you.

I am so very glad to have found this place. My husband spent two tours in Vietnam, but it is so different sending my Son in harms way. I am very proud of him, but I feal very alone sometimes. Do any of you have suggestions on what they need in care packages? He is due to go over March 1st. He just got out of basic last month. Thanks for the heads up about the passport.
