Hi! I'm new to the site as well, and also think it's great to read the posts. I wish your son the best...You must be very proud! I haven't heard of the Pilot Program but it sounds like an excellent way to get his educational requirements met. Good for him!!!

Hi ProudMother65 and mythicwoe. I'm also new to the site. My son is also at Ft. Benning, graduating this week (8/22). Ever since he was a little boy, when I would ask him what he wanted to be when he grew up, he would say "a soldier." When he graduated from high school, he wanted to enlist right away. I convinced him to go to college first. After each year, he would say he still wanted to enroll, and I would convince him to stay in school (mostly out of my fears). Well, after 3 years of college, and while I was away on a trip, he did enlist. At first I was really shocked, but once that wore off, I was really proud of him. Proud of him for doing what his heart tells him he should, and for not letting me stand in his way.

His first 6 weeks or so were pretty rough. All of his letters said he just wanted to come home. He injured his knee while he was there, and was afraid that he wouldn't be able to keep up. He called home on his weekend leave and we had a long talk about how basic training is such a short time compared to the career he wants to have, and about how the first part is really about breaking you down so they can build you back up. After that weekend, his letters became very positive - as he went on to the advanced portion of the infantry training, he started liking it more and more - learning the things that were interesting. I just can't wait to see him this week to see the changes.

I'll keep your sons, along with all of the soldiers, in my prayers.
