have you looked his/her name up on a genealogy website like rootsweb and see if it is in Social Security deaths? Those records are kept updated every month. Unfortunatley that is something that could have happened.
Do you have an idea if he did serve in the military what command he could have been with? Sometimes they have webpages or things like that in which names are listed with an email address for you to contact.
