Hey everyone! I'm new here on the forums. I'm the proud wife of a TX National Guard soldier who is currently deployed. We have 4 kiddos ranging from 8yo (almost 9) down to 2.

Here's the situation I'm curious about. DH is preparing his packet to go AD fulltime when he gets home. Of course, he will have to be released by the NG, but his committment to them will be up a few months after he gets home, so he's hoping that they will see that they can either let him transfer or he will just not renew at the end of his committment.

So, my question is this - is there any reason they wouldn't let him go fulltime? He has an excellent record and his SCO is 100% behind his transfer. I know sometimes the NG and AD are different animals though and I'm trying to get myself prepared for all eventualities.

It's so good to find a place with other military spouses! I'm the only Army wife in my area and it sure makes me feel like a duck out of water sometimes.

Actually-be prepared to be denied-soldiers ( or sailors or airmen-i dont know about marines) Who have more than 4 dependants generally require a waiver to re-enlist in the active component. Unless he is in a MOS where there are critical shortages of personnel he may not be able to transfer over or re-enlist in the active component. I know two people-one an army reserve E-4 and one a Navy reserve E-5 who have been denied transfer back to the active component in the last six months due to the number of dependants

Wow! I never would have thought that! He will be an O-3 by the time he gets back, do you think that will make a difference? I know last year they were offering huge bonuses to offering huge bonuses to get captains to stay in.
Ah well, just something else to worry about. Argh.

Being an officer will likely not make a difference-those bonuses were aimed at retention-because there has been a huge exodus of mid level officers as a result of iraq and afghanistan and they are looking to the future leadership of the army-also you have to remember that the majority ( green to gold officers being the exceptions)of the career captains they were trying to retain would be about 4 to 7 years out of West point and simply too young to have that many dependants-also you should be aware the the move from reserve to active component except for senior enlisted and those in critical MOSs (branch for officers) can involve loss of rank as well.
