I need some info, please...I have researched as much as I can on my own and I am hoping that someone out there can help me. My DH is AD Army and we are stationed overseas. My mom is back in the states and needs to become one of our dependents on my DH's orders. She has been unemployed for 2 years now (definitely not for lack of trying) and is about to be evicted from her apartment. I have done everything I could do financially to help keep her afloat, but it looks like she will have to come and live with us.

I have been supporting her financially for over a year now, but did not claim her on my taxes. What needs to be done, if anything, to have her become a military dependent? How long does it usually take? She can also claim disability but hasn't yet because she was still trying to get a job. ANY info I could get would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

It is a long, difficult process. Even if they do add her as a dependent you will have to pay to move her over there with you.

Have your husband speak with his command about the process and where to begin.

I believe you have to prove you have been supporting her by something like 80% for a certain amount of time.

There will be plenty of hoops to go through to get this done and it won't be fast either.

Hopefully someone can give more information on it all.

Here's the official Army link on determining dependency for parents:
Dependency Determination

Please be aware of the regs concerning getting a parent-dependent (PD) medical care thru Tricare. Medical care for parent-dependents is thru a program called Tricare Plus. Basically, PDs can ONLY get medical care at a military treatment facility (MTF) on a space-available basis. Tricare Plus is NOT an automatic thing -- some MTFs aren't accepting any more enrollees. Contact the MTF to find out if they're accepting Tricare Plus enrollees if your Mom will need medical care.

Thanks for the replies. I had a feeling it wouldn't be easy...most things in the military rarely are. I will start with the paperwork right away and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again.
