First one is: My husband has been in for two years now, he has some students loans that we are paying on, is there anyway we can just get some of his G.I bill to pay them off, cause that would help us out A LOT.
"no. the GI Bill can only be used to get a new degree..and it cannot be the same level or below what you currently have. so if you have a BS or BA, you can only use the GI Bill to get a Masters or PHD.
there is a separate program to get Student Loans repaid. not everyone qualifies though( Officers do NOT) and not all loans qualify."
since he is AD, he can get them deferred however. at minimum it is for the first term of enlistment, although since he has already been in two years, they may not give him the full four years, just the final two. No payments are due, although interest still accrues. Also, if not there already, he can have the interest rate lowered to 6%.
I don't think they will lower the interest because SCRA does not apply to student loans. If he has federal loans, portions of the loans can be forgiven if he is deployed for longer than 12 months, but you would have to request it, it's not automatic.
