He served on a destroyer in WW2. How do I find out what ship he was on and what happened to the ship?

Start with his separation papers as they list his ships

If you google National Archives and go to their official website, there will be a box that says, "Most Requested". Click on "Military Service Records" and the next page tells you how to order them. Sorry the terms of service don't allow a link. : (

If your father did not keep a copy of his service record, it may be difficult to obtain, as there was a disastrous fire years ago in which many records were lost. Good luck!

That fire didn't effect Navy records, so she should be fine.
