Hello all
I'm in a bit of a difficult situation. My husband is an active duty Marine. My brother live in another state than us and is having trouble at home, he is 17. My parents are not providing for him very well and he's asking me if he can live with my husband and I. We are both perfectly okay with that and do not mind taking him in. I'm sure that this would be an issue with the military with dependant status and such... I don't even know where I would begin... Anyone have any suggestions? Is there anything I can do? Thank you so much!!! |

To add him as a dependent, your husband would have to fill out paperwork and prove that he has been providing over 50% of your brother's living expenses for the past year. That does not sound like the case.
However, if you live off base, you can have him live with you if you like, he just won't be your husband's dependent. If you live on base, you need to check with the housing office to see what the rules are. |

since he is a minor, you would have to get court ordered custody/guardianship in order for your brother to be granted dependency status, meaning he could get an ID card and be covered under TRICARE as well as be permitted to live in MFH.
(The provide 50% or more of all living expenses for a year that deke mentions typically applies to adults. ) If you live off base, there are no issues with him moving in with you, it's just that he will be considered just another civilian and not have any unescorted access to any and all base facilities nor will he be considered when you PCS. No Tricare, no ID card, no commissary or exchange privileges, etc. if you live on base you need permission from Housing( and sometimes the base itself) to have guests stay more than 30 days. There can be no freedom without sacrifice |
