Ok. I'll try and make this simple. This is my first time having a relationship with someone in the army. My boyfriend is being deployed in October to Korea for 1 year. Our baby is due in February so he won't be here. My question is, when I deliver,is our child just considered "fatherless" (by law) until he returns? we are planning a wedding after he returns but what about supporting the baby while he's away? Is that left up to me or is there something that can be done before he leaves. I want to ask him but I don't want to seem like I cant handle the situation. Like I said, this is my first time with all this and i need as much support as possible. Thank you!!!
I don't know the procedure of getting an out-of-wedlock child enrolled in DEERS when the sponsor is deployed or overseas. Since you are planning a wedding already, I do know that if you get married before he leaves, it would probably be easier (financially and logistically, due to receiving BAH, having you enrolled in DEERS and covered by Tricare) for both of you. Is that (even just a courthouse wedding, with ceremony to follow after he gets back) an option for you? It may be worth considering.
Other people may have some suggestions for you that are more helpful, but that was my first thought.

FYI: Korea is not a deployment, it is a one year Remote PCS.
depending on the command, he may be required to provide proof of paternity( and sometimes, having his name on the birth certificate will not be sufficient.).
he can enroll the child into DEERS as soon as you have the BC and social security number for him.
any payment arrangements would be made via civil court WRT to child support. you may also need a court order making him responsible for enrolling the baby into Medical insurance as well.

I don't know if this is a hard and fast rule. For our situation, the unofficial "birth certificate" from the hospital (pretty pink paper with DD's name, birthdate, birthtime, and footprints) was enough to enroll our daughter into DEERS. The reason I bring this up is because we had to wait 6 months before we could even APPLY for a SSN due to the volume of births in Los Angeles County where DD was born. It wasn't until DD was nearly 9 months before we got her SSN; up until then, her SSN was "000-00-0000" in all her records.
All it took for us, was birth certificate, and ssn... BUT we were married. My best friend is ANG, and not married to his son's mother, and it takes a paternity test, and a court order for him to get his son enrolled in deers and tricare.
