Okay I am looking at getting a camera shortly. A digital, zooms, takes pictures immediately (not this delay with some digital), can do still shots during movement (dd constantly moves so pictures now are blurry sometimes). It has been along time since I bought one and want some advice on which brand, type, etc... I won't be buying it until September or October (maybe I'll buy my own birthday present hmmmm Wink ) but want some ideas to look at.

We live OCONUS in electronic heaven where you can get good deals, but also get scammed when they think they can (please never try to scam a woman who grew up with a mother that only buys stuff on sale, now has a MIL that does the same and lives on military pay. They better be careful or I might do some sweet talking myself lol plus I have local friends who don't pay regular price either). So I am looking at spending max of about $750, I figured that should give me some more options.

Thanks

Hey NWIP. Last winter I bought the Canon Power Shot SD870 IS. Overall, the camera takes beautiful pictures. I put it in the "kids & pets" mode and I never have a blurry picture. I have a 2 1/2 year old so he is never still so I needed one to capture motion. As far as point and click goes, it depends on what mode I am in and the enviornment. I had a Sony before and my Canon takes much better pictures. Here's a pic that I have took with it:

One thing you may want to consider is if you want a pocket size camera or an SLR type body. I'm pretty sure the Canon Power Shot is a pocket size camera. They usually take very good pictures but these are the ones that you see everybody holding 12-18 inches away from their face to take the picture. The SLR type body looks and acts like the pre-digital cameras. I bought my wife a Canon Rebel XT which has the SLR body. She just loves it although at times she would like to have the pocket size. We've been using it to take pictures of everything including newborn grandbaby pictures with no problems at all.

I agree with mturnb- I have a kodak that looks like an old style, and enjoy it a lot. For me, it allows more freedom, and I love being able to manual zoom and focus it I want to.

Here's a hint, at least with mine you can completely turn off the review feature and just snap a ton of pictures in sequence. No delay time at all that way. Then, just review and delete later.

The one we currently have is the pocket size and it does take pretty good pictures but I want something beyond that. I looked at the one you suggested and that is about what I am looking for, so I will keep that in mind.

I have a Canon dSLR rebel and I love it! you can get the cam, memory card, and a few other accessories for about what your budget is. If you are serious about getting good pics with no shutter lag it's a good choice. Prior to that I had a Canon point and Shoot and while it was good, there was still a lag. I study photog now (trying to get good pics of my kiddos) and am an expert photoshop user too so that helps me. Now I'm looking to upgrade! I'd be happy to show you some of the kids of pics I was able to get with it!

I currently have 2 Canon. Love them both. I have a Canon G9 (in your range).

I also have a Canon 40D, with 17-50mm Zoom. This is an awesome camera but much higher cost.

I did look around for a good carry around camera and decided on the Canon G9, for my everyday camera.
  • 12.1 Megapixels
  • 6x Obtical Zoom, 4x Digital (24x total)
  • Optical stapelizer
  • Digic III Image Processor
  • 3" LCD
  • Good Macro capability
It's not a tiny shirt pocket camera but not much larger. I prefer a camera I can grab and hold in my hand and take photos with one hand. Most people overlook that. Many of the tiny cameras require 2 hands to operate.
