Just curious if anyone has had a chance to go to one of the new commissary sales where they bring the commissary to you?

Since a lot of reserve/NG families are nowhere near a post or base, they've started this new program to try and help those families take advantage of their benefits by bringing the commisary to them.

We're in Nashville and an hour from Redstone and an hour 1/2 from Ft. Campbell so I don't think they'll ever come close to here. The closest "event" they're having is near Knoxville in a few months which is almost four hours away.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone has been able to use this service and if it was worth it on the off chance it ever does come near us.

interesting-ive never heard of it either-so it may only be in certain DCA areas where they feel there would be enough demand-and not all over the country-and if thats the case we will not see it out here-
as for if it would be "worth it" i generally find the commissary about 30 percent cheaper in colorado springs where there is no sales tax on food-and a little more than that in denver where there is. some things are markedly cheaper-dairy for example-you pay the federal support price in the commissary-and the commissaries meat is outstanding-and they cut it themselves which not so many places do any more. for canned goods sometimes its cheaper on the economy-produce is usually cheaper in the commissary-but better quality on the economy-especially at farmers markets.

Here's a press release about it...

http://www.commissaries.com/press_room/press_release/2008/DeCA_50_08.cfm

About a month ago, when I checked the website out, they had an online order form where you could order your grocery items ahead of time and then just go and pick them up at the site during the event. It looked like everything was mostly sold in bulk, kind of like Sam's or Costco's - 18 rolls of Charmin for a pretty good price. I'm just curious about whether it's a good deal to do.

We're talking about maybe scheduling our grocery shopping once every two weeks and going down to Redstone for our groceries... just gotta figure out if the price of gas is worth any savings we might get. Decisions! Roll Eyes

Orchid - you're right about prices being cheaper - my husband was at drill this past weekend and he saw a pack of hot dogs for .99. At the main grocery store we shop at here at home, the same exact brand/pack of hot dogs was $3.79! (not including tax!)
