you may have noticed a bit more blacking out on posts. there has been a new list submitted to the filters program. there are..glitches.. it has already been brought to the proper peoples' attention, and hopefully it can be resolved quickly.
It's been a few days and the gurus are still trying to iron out some difficulties with the censoring program. We are making note of them as we see them, but we can't know/see every word that is messed up in the system, so as you come across them, please don't just remark in them in the thread you're writing in, please post them here so that we can collect them as a list and submit them to be worked on.
Out of curiousity, do the mods set the standards for the filter, or is that the EVE hosting site? Mostly I'm just wondering if we're going to have "sensitive" body part words banned, even if they aren't curses, like ***** (b o o b s), **** (b u t t), etc.
No, we don't, but there is a level between the moderators and the hosting company in charge of that type of stuff. But according to the list we received, yes, "slang" words for body parts will be/are banned.
"*******s" should be "c r a c k e r s" (like the crispy bread-like thing that you put peanut ****er or cream cheese on; I know that there is a derogatory term that comes from that, but I haven't seen it used on these forums nearly often enough to constitute having the word blocked even when used correctly; just IMO). And there's that "b u t t e r" one again.
the new list was handed down from on high. as you might have noticed, it was a bit too over thought. Rob has been working hard to fix them as we bring them to his attention.
If people are using ******* in a manner in which it would offend someone, maybe they are the ones that should be on moderation/suspended instead of trying to go through and edit every word that comes out of everyones mouth.
As Mrsjvb already mentioned, the censorship filters are not established, changed, or controlled by moderators, so they're two separate issues. However, I can pass your suggestion along.
Nope, not really one for debate. I like people to get along and be friendly. No, really I've found that I take things too personally and end up feeling hurt when my views are attacked, so I just avoid it. Makes things much easier. I'd rather hang out here to meet other spouses and chat about normal everyday stuff.
Found another one for you to pass on up, though. "co****", (c o a r s e, as in rough).
It is apparent that I can read so I have read what JVB said about it, thanks for pointing it out again.
Obviously though the thought of trying to censor more came from the mods and higher up because they were seeing the word ******* or whatever used against people. That is where the mods should come into play, not some machine/program. I am not trying to be defiant, just stating some facts.
Not necessarily - from the way the list was presented to us, it seems that it's a regular review that is just automatically done and updated, then presented to moderators, not necessarily something that's spurred on by any particular person, popular derogatory term, or what have you. I could be wrong, but that's how it was presented to us.
But regardless, both your suggestion and ertstic's have been sent on up, I'll be sure to let you know if we hear any reply on other options. They're also trying to work on these individual words-within-words, slowly but surely they're getting them resolved.
I was telling the girls on the one forum I go to regularly that we went to *****oteague Island, VA (C h i n c o t e a g u e) The first 5 letters were bleeped out. I understand that it could be a bad slang word for a nationality, but could not believe it was!
It is right by Assateague Island, I wonder if that will be bleeped!! (it is where the wild ponies run)
