my husband has been in the navy for a little over a year and he has recently found out he has a kidney disease. he has been prescribed pain meds, and has been on siq for 3 weeks now. he has to check in to the docter every 6 mths, which would make it hard to do deployments. can they discharge him for this. he has never had any problems with his kidneys before so this isnt pre-existing. also if he is discharged does he still get pay and benifits or is it like disability. not sure if i'm way out of line asking this here but if anyone that has any advice would be appreciated. It really scares me not knowing what could happen to our family plus im pregnant so i'm so much more stressed.....

We have universities, where men go to become great thinkers. They have no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma.

doesn't mean it's not pre-existing. PKD is a life-long disease that they don't necessarily check for at entry, and people can have for years w/o knowing. What it is will determine if he gets disability.

and yes, they can discharge him, but it will be a long process

We thought that my husband was going to be discharged for medical reasons when I was about 7 months pregnant with my son. It is a very scary thing not knowing what is going to happen. The tests usually take a really long time and it can be nerve racking. But hang in there. From what he told me he could have been discharged, but they don't really rush it. He is still in though...so I'm not 100% sure of how that works. We started paying off bills and saving though just to be safe. Even though he didn't get out it was still nice to have the extra money.

if he isn't outright discharged, they will most likely not allow him to re enlist when his current contract is up.

he would have to go straight to the VA to get a disability rating. even if the kidney disease is determined to be pre existing,he may still be able to all medical treatment related to that and that alone covered by the VA after he gets out.

but if he is just discharged and not medically retired, he would have no other benefits save his GI Bill and other VA bennies like Home loans and the like.

all dependents would lose all of their benefits and medical insurance as well(unless he was retired).

we still know next to nothing, he is still siq and hurting, we get is cat scan results back next week, and we will go from there. but he is going ahead and starting school so when he gets discharge or whatever happens he will have something to fall back on. he really is a good man and loves being in the military. so it sucks that this had to happen to him. but thanks for your help and concern everyone

If it comes to a medical discharge the veterans forum is EXTREMELY HELPFUL as far as what to do after that. I think you can get a disibility settlement even if you are not medically retiring. I think you dont get monthly disibility checks from veterans after that though.

thank you everyone for the posts, he went to the Urologist and they found out he has a urethral block. which is what is causing all his problems, they said it can cause the same symptoms as IGA. so he is gonna have surgery for the urethral block. and then in a month or so have a kidney biopsey. he has been put on tpu till all this gets cleared up, but they said if everything comes out good he wont be discharged. Big Grin keep us in your prayers!!!

That is fantastic. . . not that his is having surgery but that it is not kidney disease. I am happy and relieved for you and I know you are relieved. I will definitely keep you in my prayers because I remember what it was like to be facing an uncertain future while pregnant.
