I was just wondering how could I get a USMC JROTC started at my school. But my school is surrounded by the air force. Hurlburt if thats how you spell it, Eglin and Tyndall. Does this mean that the odds are that the only or first JROTC program at my school will be Air Force?

Your High School (Your Principal) must put in an application with the Training and Education Command in Quantico, Va requesting that a Marine Corps unit be established in your School.

Currently there are 81 High Schools nationwide on the waiting list for MCJROTC Programs and the next new programs are opening up in Springdale Arkansas in the 9th MCD and 2 Charter High Schools in Chicago are piggy-backing off the program already established at their parent school Noble Street Charter High School.

What state are you in? the way the system works is to get a MCJROTC program, another MCJROTC program needs to shut down. The Marine Corps is the smallest branch of the Armed Forces and also has the least amount of funds and JROTC units allocated by public law.

The target states for the program currently are Nebraska, Utah, Michigan, Wisconsin and Colorado. Michigan my home state and Nevada only have 2 units, Colorado has 1 (Big Air Force presence in the state) Wisconsin lost both of their units and the other states have none.

Other branches of the service have more funds to dedicate to their JROTC programs which is why they can stand up schools and hire instructors. If you are in an Air Force area or within close proximity of an Air Force Base your school will most likely request an Air Force unit or at least be approached by the Air Force about placing a program in your High School.

Any more questions feel free to ask, need to know what state you're in too, I can get a better pulse on the area.

Disregard that! you're in Florida and there are several schools that have MCJROTC programs already it's going to be hard to justify opening another school in Florida.

I was in NJROTC in Missouri WHne I was in high school. It was a good program, But I really wanted an MCJROTC Unit to start up. Google USMC JROTC To find their website, and E-mail your district head. He will explain how to establish a MCJROTC Unit or why one can not be established

You are apparently forgetting the United States Coast Guard, at 36,000, that's the smallest branch of the Armed Forces (and I believe, although i am not certain, only 1 JROTC program exists, somewhere in FL.)

Depends upon what your definition of "Armed Forces" is. If it is being a part of DOD, the Coast Guard is disqualified, as it is part of DHS. If you look at the Marines, technically they are part of the Navy, so perhaps the Air Force could claim being smaller.

In any case, the Coast Guard actually shoots at bad guys more than the Navy, so perhaps size is not a good measure of the fight in the service. Coasties are okay in my book, even when they tried to steal the credit for a dope seizure I made while working for Customs back in the 1990's! Semper Paratus, amigo!

I lived on both side of that fence....6 yrs USCG, (Chase, Station Merrimac River, Islamorada) 17 yrs U.S. Customs Marine Enforcement Officer, SrMEO.(Key Largo, WPB, Clearwater) I can say for sure, we all did some stealing of credit, especially from the State and Local agencies. Big Grin

I believe that first poster was in Florida by the bases he listed in the area.

FYI, my son was in a MCJROTC in New Hampshire all four years of his high school. There is no Marine Corps bases anywhere nearby as far as I am aware of so I doubt which branch is near has much to do with it.

My son is now a LCpl, USMC, training on the Amphibious Assault Vehicles out at Camp Pendleton. He loves the Marine Corps!!!!!

My high school was approved for a MCJROTC unit. But, one hasnt been established yet. Currently, I'm in NJROTC. How can I get one established at my school faster? Is there anything that can be done to speed up the process?

Wasn't the USCG part of the DOD before 9/11?

No. Prior to 9/11 they were under the Dept of Transportation. A question some guy got wrong on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"

They now fall under the Dept. of Homeland Security.

In times of war while in a warzone, the USCG will operate under the direction of the US Navy as they did in Vietnam, WWII, etc. I don't know the actual term for the Operation Condition. An example today is that the USCG has cutters, large and small operating over in the Persian Gulf. They are working under the Navy command, meanwhile, the rest of the USCG fleet not in that area remain working for DHS.

If we were now in a war at sea rather than in the Middle East, you'd likely see those Coast Guard cutters involved painted grey instead of white.

Below is the USCG Cutter Midgett working with a U.S. Carrier in the Persian Gulf.

You may want to be in USMC JROTC but being in any JROTC unit is good.

If your school has an AFJROTC, then that is what you will have to get into if you want.

I'm just a dad and an ex USCG so I am not speaking with all the facts in front of me but I believe once the school goes with AFJROTC, than that's that, no chance of a MCJROTC unless the school decides on the change....no reason to, I would think.

It really shouldn't matter which program the school goes with, they are trying to have the students learn lessons in pride, teamwork, etc, not become actual Marines or Airmen, etc.

I am forced to leave my school every day to go to another school for JROTC...and the way our the class times are set up, we(other cadets)miss the first twenty munites of class everyday...I guess I should be happy that they let us leave...my school doesn't even have a JROTC program...myself and the other four cadets take turns driving to the other school...I PT every day at 1125 without a chance to eat until 1530...I hate PTing hungry but we have no time to stop and eat because the time we miss at our primary (actual)school is the lunch peroid so we eat after school...I hate that...I love food!!!

When I was a junior in high school, a bunch of us started a campaign to get a JROTC program up and running. After doing quite a bit of work on this we found out a bunch of Hippie school board members in the 70s created a rule prohibiting establishment of JROTC in any of our schools. These moonbats still made up a majority of the school board. They let it be known they would not changed the law.

I hate hippies.

It doesn't matter what JROTC program you are part of, it doesn't have an effect on your enlistment. I had people I went to Army BCT with that were in Navy JROTC before. It really doesn't matter.
