Hey, I'm a new member, and I work with marines at MCAS miramar. There is a museum I work at in my spare time that deals with Marine Aviation. One of my favorite topics is the Huey, especially the UH-1E variant. Now, I noticed in Vietnam, Hueys had turrets. In these turrets were Tat-101 (two m60Cs in the turret). Now that varied from squadron to squadron, but does anyone know if they put m197 (the three barreled 20mms) on Huey turrets as well?

In the modern world, I see UH-1Ns with door guns and rocket pods, but I don't see any turret guns.
I asked a former marine about this, and he said that the UH-1N had a gun pod below the fuselage. This pod could be aimed without adjusting the Huey itself. Is this true? what sort of armament is the gun pod?
And what sort of armament will the UH-1Y Huey Venom have?

Thanks.

13078550 in regards to your question on whether or not they had the 3 barrel turret 20mm. the answer is yes. I am a big military fan, and ex-Navy/Submariner. So anytime I see any ordinance or firepower of any kind I look it over closely. I was at the state fair in New York and they had a Huey Cobra there. When I got up close I saw that it had in it's turret a 3 barreled 20mm cannon. I said to my son I never knew they had that on the noses of Cobras. That gun certainly gave it some real punch. it cut down trees in the jungle like butter. It also probably killed alot just by the spray of wood splinters. My friend in Oregon was bear hunting once and shot at a bear. He knew he missed, because he saw bark fly off the tree next to it. The bear had keeled over much to his confusion. It turned out the spray of slivers actually killed it by hitting all the vitals in the abdominal area. This guy had more luck as a sportsman than I've ever seen!

TO: 13870550. There is always a lot of confusion and misinformation regarding military WEAPONS SYSTEMS and helicopter systems are no exception.
You are wondering about the HUEY (UH-1 series airframe sub-systems) weapons. Yes: a Turret was mounted on the nose of some U-1's (Usually "C or M" Models) as they had the 540 rotor system and more "Power" for flight due to the design. The C had a T-53L11 Engine and the M a L13 with much more power. The L-13 was in he origional G model Cobra.

However, the turret mounted on the HUEY, was designed for the M-5 40 mm grenade launcher system and NOT a 20 MM cannon, 3 barrel or other wise.
The single gun TAT-102 was the ORIGIONAL TURRET designed and deployed to RVN for the AH-1G cobra and did not work very well. It had a hydraulic drive motor and leaked like a cive! It was quickly replaced by the XM-28 which held two guns. The TAT-102 only held one gun.

EVERYTHING we seemed to do then was labeld "XM" ### for exparimental. You would not believe some of the stuff we tried to make work! Someimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Remember, we had the UH "1". The nuber "1" is there for a reason. Few things we had were really standardized.
GO TO: //Tri.army.mil/LC/CS/csa/aaarmysys.htm and you will find a very good listing of these systems and how they were used.
I was a crewchief on these in RVN. My MOS was 67N2F and I trained at APG, MD as a 45J20 aircraft weapons specialist and 45B small arms repairman. I was with the 1st ID in 68-69 at Phu Loi, north of DIAN (P/N "Zion").
Best Regards,
JD

the XM197 is side mounted on huey gunships to be used for attacking targets in front but the nose turret was as 15219629 says for a single barrled 40mm GL but the XM197 was redesigned and is use on AH-1W's and AH-1Z's

the venom will be armed with what huey's have been armed with for decades door mounted 7.62 medium machine guns and 2.75 mm rockets or browning M2's or the M134D minigun
