Protests turn violent in Tibetan capital

>>LINK<<

excerpt...

BEIJING - Protests led by Buddhist monks against Chinese rule in Tibet turned violent Friday, with shops and vehicles torched and gunshots echoing through the streets of the ancient capital, Lhasa. A radio report said two people had been killed.

The U.S. and the European Union called on China to show restraint in the face of the protests and Washington said Beijing should respect Tibetan culture. Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, appealed to China not to use force against demonstrators.

The Dalai Lama called on the Chinese leadership to "address the long-simmering resentment of the Tibetan people through dialogue with the Tibetan people. I also urge my fellow Tibetans not to resort to violence." His statement was issued from India where he is in exile.

Pro-Tibet protests were also staged in India and Nepal. In Katmandu, Nepal police scuffled with about 1,000 protesters, including dozens of Buddhist monks, during a rally. About 12 monks were injured. Police arrested dozens of pro-Tibet protesters near the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, India.

In Lhasa, the largest demonstrations in nearly two decades against Beijing's 57-year-rule of Tibet began Monday, coming at a critically sensitive time for China as it attempts to portray a unified and prosperous nation ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games in August.

Tibet poses dilemma for Beijing

quote:
...Tibetan protesters seem determined to make their points while the eyes of the world are turned on China in this Olympic year.

They want to voice their protest against what they see as China's violation of human rights in the region and they want more freedom, both religious and political.

A Tibetan Intifadeh Against China?

quote:
The Chinese administration of Tibet in the last two years or so has been particularly harsh and provocative, says Barnett, who attributes the tone to the Communist Party Secretary for Tibet, Zhang Qingli. "He is the Rottweiler of the Chinese establishment and has been extremely provocative. He even said once that the Communist Party was Buddha, not the Dalai Lama."

Chinese already outnumber ethnic Tibetans in Lhasa, and many Tibetans felt that they might end up as strangers in their own country, a fate suffered by Mongolians in Chinese-administered Inner Mongolia.

"It used to be the Tibetans were protesting against Chinese rule," says Nicholas Bequelin, China researcher with New York-based Human Rights Watch. "But now they're protesting against the destruction of their whole civilization, their whole world. They feel that they are doomed if they don't do something. And when people feel that desperation there's no knowing what it could lead them to do."

Here is the thread about the current Chinese crackdown on Tibet on the "In the News" section of military.com's forums.

http://forums.military.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/672198221/m/1680066471001

The relative quickness with which the PRC govt. came down on the protests only further proves that the CCP is very much paranoid about losing stability and will crack down on any threats to it.

And here is part of the article from the article link below:

Tibetan Exile Group Says at Least 30 Killed in Chinese Crackdown on Riots
By AUDRA ANG
The Associated Press
BEIJING

China ordered tourists out of Tibet's capital Saturday while troops on foot and in armored vehicles patrolled the streets and confined government workers to their offices, a day after riots that a Tibetan exile group said left at least 30 protesters dead.

The demonstrations against Chinese rule of Tibet are the largest and most violent in the region in nearly two decades. They have spread to other areas of China as well as neighboring Nepal and India.

In the western province of Gansu, police fired tear gas Saturday to disperse Buddhist monks and others staging a second day of protests in sympathy with anti-Chinese demonstrations in Lhasa, local residents said.

The protests led by Buddhist monks began Monday in Tibet on the anniversary of a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule. They turned violent on Friday when demonstrators burned cars and shops. Witnesses said they heard gunshots on Friday and more shooting on Saturday night.

The eruption of violence comes just two weeks before China's Olympic celebrations kick off with the start of the torch relay, which passes through Tibet. China is gambling that its crackdown will not bring an international outcry over human rights violations that could lead to boycotts of the Olympics.

Beijing's hosting of the Olympics in August has already brought scrutiny of China's human rights record and its pollution problems...

None outside Tibet (known as Xizang/西藏 province in Mandarin), most probably.

If you're talking about the Chinese who live in Taiwan (the ROC) and Singapore and other large Overseas Chinese communities (Hua Qiao/華僑) all over the world, I'm almost sure that they would be horrified by it since they would be getting their info from the mainstream, world media.

Seemed like whoever wrote this article desperately wanted to separated Tibet from China and he is trying to play word game by putting two meanings to one sentence.

1. This one is trying to create an impression that Tibetan inhabitants are surrouned by "Chinese" which is an overwhelming group and "Chinese" are "Diluting" them. Well, China is a multicultural country with 56 ethnic groups, every group of the 56 is technically outnumbered by the combination of other groups. So what he mentioned is basically non-sense, if he meant by Geographycally, then same thing applies to all provinces in China and everwhere else on Earth e.g. Washington Inhabitants vs American. About the Inner Mongonia issue, this guy must have fabricated the issue, we have people from Inner Mongoia all over China, no one tried to alienate them unless someone asks so.

2. Tibetans are Chinese.

quote:

They feel that they are doomed if they don't do something. And when people feel that desperation there's no knowing what it could lead them to do."

Precisely the point, that is why those one's all called the unrest. We were lucky that "They"
are actully 600 unhappy/instructed monks of Dalai Lama not all Tibetans.

And a good brief introduction of Tibet

"None outside Tibet, most probalby", Why thinking like that? better not to make any conclusions too soon before searching for facts.

I'm sorry to tell you that the truth is pretty much every Chinese knows about it, the news are everywhere, related discussions, pictures and videos are already more than a few hundered pages in major Forums/BBS of China

Below are some selected popular sites of China, and I directed the links to this Tibet issue straight. Satisfy yourself if you can read Chinese, you will find more pictures and videos on this issue than news channels.

I have an even better idea,

goto www.google.cn
or chinese search engine www.baidu.com

search keyword

西藏暴乱 or 西藏骚乱

want to see videos then append 视频 at the end of the letter.

A) The population of the USA is a bit more than 4 million.

B) I don't care how many computers there are in China...its what you are allowed to access on them that matters, and the Chicoms censor out anything that they don't agree with.

C) The Chicoms see almost all religous groups as a threat because they teach belief in a higher power than capitalism and government control.

For those who never know the True Tibet situation and problem, I found a well written Article in Feb 1999, better have a look at it carefully, as a Chinese, I think it discussed the true problems in detail which are not available to outsiders or which became misception of Western world.

Tibet through Chinese Eyes

Many Chinese working in Tibet regard themselves as idealistic missionaries of progress, rejecting the Western idea of them as agents of cultural imperialism. In truth, they are inescapably both
