Im new to these forums. I have read what I could and didnt find anything that can help me. Heres my situation. I recently got out of the Army. I served 4 years as an infantryman, with 2 tours in Iraq. I got an honorable discharge. Since then I have been diagnosed with PTSD. Currently I am getting 70% disability from the VA. Mostly for PTSD. I go to the VA about every 3 weeks to talk to a PTSD specialist. I was on some medication, but I stopped and Im not going to start up again. Im very determined to try and put the past behind me the best I can. Now Im working as a security guard for an AF base part time, while taking online college courses full time earning a 4yr degree in Homeland Security.
It is my longterm goal to get my foot in the door with Federal LE. Im looking into the Secret Service Uniformed Division, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Both jobs I would be well qualified for after I get my degree. Top secret clearances are needed. My question is will my past problems with PTSD keep me from getting a job like this? Ive been through a lot, but Im only getting better. Im almost 100% now. My doctor has told me the Govt cant use past mental problems against anyone when doing the BI's. He said he would write the agency something saying how I would be fit to work for them, and just needed to sort some things out. Im just hoping that this might DQ me when they conduct my backround investigations. Am I just getting my hopes up? Or do I have a good chance? Any help would be great! Thanks.

If you read the mental condition required to become 70% PTSD (I am 50% myself), it would certainly be incompatible with such jobs. I would suggest you show improvement and change the percentage before trying such jobs. Here is what your percentage means:
Occupational and social impairment, with
deficiencies in most areas, such as work, school,
family relations, judgment, thinking, or mood, due
to such symptoms as: suicidal ideation;
obsessional rituals which interfere with routine
activities; speech intermittently illogical,
obscure, or irrelevant; near-continuous panic or
depression affecting the ability to function
independently, appropriately and effectively;
impaired impulse control (such as unprovoked
irritability with periods of violence); spatial
disorientation; neglect of personal appearance and
hygiene; difficulty in adapting to stressful
circumstances (including work or a worklike
setting); inability to establish and maintain
effective relationships........................... 70

I am rated 70% total, 50% for PTSD. Im sure by the time I apply, I can bring my rating down a lot, to 30% total or so. Even testing fine and having good interviews, would it still be a problem to have it in the past when looking at these jobs?
