Hello everyone,
If you are a Marine reading this I thank you!!! If you are a Marine parent I My son is at rct now and from there he will be headed to mos at ft sill. He is going for artilary / meteroligist (Last I knew). Can anyone give me a ruff idea on how long he will most likely be there? Would it be a good or bad idea to try to go for Christmas or Thanksgiving. My son has a three year old daughter that lives with me part time. The hardest part of joing the Marines for him is being away from her. Any info anyone could pass on would be great. Proub Marine Mom |

My information might not be correct but to the best of my knowledge is that if his MOS is 2887 which i believe it is then he will be going out to 29 Palms, CA first before he goes to Fort Sill. I have to good buddies with that MOS and they both had to come out here for electronics schooling beofre they went to Fort Sill. His schooling here will be about 3 months long soo i don't know when he will be graduationg bootcamp/mct but if he does have that MOS he will be comming out here for atleast a few months first.

I was a Marine and a 2887. I served during the period of 1990 to 1996. After boot camp and Marine Combat Training, there was a three month run at 29 Palms, CA for Basic Electronics Training. After that my training took a little detour. When I shipped to Fort Sill my class was not ready to pick up. So, I was sent to operator training this was for 8 weeks. Then of course the repair training was for about six months. In total I spent eleven months at Fort Sill. Your Marine has a fine MOS. My immediate advice is have your Marine attend college courses on base at both the stumps and Ft. Sill. The military training plus a college degree will open so many opportunities in both the military and civilian sectors.

I was an 87. I spent 4 months total at 29 Palms for receiving and basic electronics, then went on to Ft. Sill for six months. My class picked right up. They try to time them so there is no delay. Chances are if he hasn't been to 29 and finished most of basic electronics then he doesn't know if he will be an 87. They pretty much pick them random. There is an artillery MET (meteorology) class that trains there too (I was good friends with many). That sounds to be more likely your sons situation. If he picks up quickly he should only be there about 3 months. I hope this shines some light on your situation. Tell him to get ready for a time. Marines stationed at an Army base are held to very strict rules, I know a lot of fellas that either lost rank or got kicked out from there. Gotta keep your nose clean.
