I am currently an Aviation Electrician, I honestly don't enjoy my job but I'm giving it all I've got.
I am interested in re-enlisting in computer repair and/or networking. I was wondering if someone could shed the light on what an 0651/0656 may be tasked with in Iraq and Stateide? Is anyone here in this MOS and have tips/pros and cons of the job? |

im an 0621, but i have been around 51's enough to give you a brief description. in iraq they pretty much run all the CAT-5 internet cables, hook up routers, get e-mail accounts set up, and fix basic problems with computers. for example our cwo3 told our data guy his keyboard was broke and he wanted a new one. so our data guy plugged the keyboard into the computer and magically it started working. in garrison they surf the web all day waiting for something to break. they also have to set up voice tele conferences for the CO and do the same job they do in iraq. it's not the worlds most exciting job but its not bad at all.

There is definitely a few Marines around here with the MOS you are asking about, and I'm sure they will provide you with some more recent info, my time was a bit.... long ago!
In fact some say my unit helped provide the wireless communications back when Moses crossed the Red Sea. But do yourself a favor in the mean time. Don't let your current skills go to the wayside. Once you are out, your chances of finding a good paying job might depend more on the one than the other. It's a dog eat dog situation anymore in the civilian job market. |

I'm a 0656, just got out a year ago. I liked the job. But with all jobs you tend to get bored with them. When I was in a grunt battalion we usually submitted trouble requests to NMCI or Legacy (I worked out of Pendleton.) Practiced on Servers and Cisco equipment. A lot of EPLRS training. In Iraq was mostly maintaining networks, filling Eplrs, and fixing computers as well as the camp internet cafe. At the end of my enlistment I was placed in a regimental comm and there we dealt more with transfering the base over to NMCI. Real pain. Grunt unit is the way to go. Real low end work and minimal troubleshooting. And access to the internet while interesting doesn't really help when you have a crap load of new jobs and tasks piling up. All in all I had fun. Really good training with Cisco and everything
