Hey Guys,
my husband is leaving for MCT this week and will go to 29palms, CA afterwards for Data Communications/Maintenance. 1) As of right now his orders say school doesn't begin until Jan 19th. What will he be doing from Mid Dec till then? 2) Can he leave base to come see us on the East Coast? CAn i go to see him? 3) Any ideas on where he will be assigned for PDS? Thanks so much! |

MCT is about 3 weeks, longer if something goes wrong.
The school at 29 Palms, MCCES, shuts down for Christmas. He will be encouraged to take leave, but may not have enough leave on the books to be able to do so. In that case he will just hang out and do any odd jobs required, like clean up the place, until his classes start. 2800's are at school for at least 6 months, so it is a PCS move. Technically 29 Palms is his PDS. What that means is that the Marine Corps will move you out to 29 Palms and the both of you into housing. Unless you want to stay where you are. Then he stays into the barracks. There is no way to tell where he will go after school. Generally first choice of available stations go to the highest grade, so there are advantages to studying. |

Thanks for the info Thorin...its much appreciated.
Is there any reason why they say the school is 93 days and not 6mths? Is it the 93days is his basic school and then he has to complete another course? |

All 2800 Marines must complete BEC (Basic Electronics Course). Then they go on to their actual MOS school. That 93 days is for BEC. All of the follow on schools are at least as long, and some twice that. |

The command has a web site. It would be useful to look at it.
Upon completion of school, a Marine in the 2800 field may be assigned to air or ground units as well as non FMF(Fleet Marine Force) support units such as repair and rebuild facalities. |

also ..they could be in waiting for different periods of time. When i went through we waited on " sand watch" for a few months.Eventually it got so backed up they sent marines to the field communications units first for a month or so then 29palms.

MODERATOR, MARINE FORUMS I'm innocent! I'm the John Boy....... |
Thorin is correct. BEC alone is 3+ months and that's if he doesn't get dropped back. His follow on scholl will be at least that long also.
I'll also add, that if your husband stays in the Corps he will see more schools in 29 Palms. Hey Thorin, are they still running TTC out there? Or has it changed? Semper Fi John If you're gonna shoot, shoot! Don't Talk. |

Yup, they are still wasting time with that. Why the Corps spends money teaching TTC to people who no longer touch the gear is a mystery to me. |
