I was on Leeward side at (Gitmo) in 1975, We was in the field at Lejeune and our Staff said they needed 6 volunteer's for a special missions force guantanamo bay cuba, we had went to cuba while on our carib cruise in 1974 and thought boy this would be a good duty station you know after doing some of our maneuver's there we got to see some of the base Winward side you know the PX, the Marine Barracks, a nice Mess Hall, after being in the field and eating sea rats, we never thought about or really knew about Leeward, and Winward side's of the base so our hands went up and before long we were on our way to gitmo, we went by ship the USS Sreveport, once there we convoyed to the bay and cought the ferry I looked at one of my buddies and said boy I don't remember this I wonder what we got ourselves into. well it didn't take long to find out my first night there I went way out to post 20 to get a radio up and going it was an earie feeling going out knowing about the fence line, and the mine fields and the stories of the cubans shooting they're own people for trying to get over the fence to our side. Well to make a long story short when we came back to the states we were pretty salty, anybody out there on gitmo during those day's? Semper Fi!!! and Keep On Keepin On.
