I've been noticing a huge sluggishness of Mil.com.

I have a decent computer with plenty of ram and high speed internet.

Sometimes the site actually times out.

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issue?

Yes and I sent a message to admin.

I was basically told it's my computer's fault or that I just needed to hit the refresh button.

Well....other sites work just fine with my computer and, sometimes, the refresh button takes so long re-loading the page I just give up.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum.

Yes, I'm sure there are some times that the servers are sluggish (particularly if a backup is running in the background), but there are a couple of things that can be done to help things along on your end:

  • Clearing out Temporary Internet files.
If you're using Internet Explorer, on the top menu click on Tools, then select Internet Options from the drop-down menu. On that tab (General), under "Temporary Internet Files" section, click the Delete Files button, and that will empty it's cache and let it start clean again.

Note: The Military.com Forums (like most forums) contain a lot of graphics, especially avatars, even if most of them are fairly small. If your Temporary Internet Files space is full (and it doesn't take long), it takes your browser longer to open a page, as it has to delete some of the older files, to make room for any new ones it's loading from the current page. So clearing that occasionally, will improve performance on this site and any others you visit.

  • Remove Ad-ware/Spyware.
The most common Ad-ware/Spyware items you get are Tracking Cookies. A quick and easy way to get rid of them, is to use the Delete Cookies button, in the "Temporary Internet Files" section discussed above -- but this way is NOT RECOMMENDED if you have logins or preferences saved on some websites (that uses good cookies, and this button deletes all cookies). If that happens, you just need to save those preferences again on the appropriate sites (you haven't lost anything irreplaceable, it's just a pain to go back to those sites and set that up again). What I DO recommend is getting one of the many free Ad-ware and Spyware removal utilities (just do a search for "Spyware", and that should get you many to choose from). Those types of utilities only remove the bad cookies that track which websites you go to and use up your computer's processing power (and your bandwidth!!) to report back it's ill-gotten information. I highly recommend using one of those utilities at least once a month, as that can make a major difference in your computer's Internet performance! (I've worked on computers that have been brought to their knees from just accumulating 300 - 400 tracking cookies!).

Anyway, doing those things should help your performance on this and any other websites. Wink

Ciao!
