I searched through the forum to see if there was any pertinent information but didn't see anything similar to my situation so here goes...
I am a 30 year old Captain in the Army National Guard. I am in good standing, have good OER's, and am currently in command. My branch is Engineer, though I was a Business major in college and construction project manager in the civilian world. I have over five years commissioned service, two of which I was activated for training and Iraq. Given the tenuous market for commercial construction at present I have recently begun looking into some other opportunities just in case.
My question in case you haven't guessed it is if there's a place for me on active duty in the Coast Guard. My experience with the CG is limited to my google-fu and my honeymoon at Borinquen Air Station in Puerto Rico. I read about the Prior Military Officer program and that seems like the most likely course of action. I know that the general consensus might be to talk to a recruiter but I figured I'd put it out there in case anyone can shed light on what sort of skill sets the CG is looking for out of officers from other branches.
CPT, First thanks for your service. The Prior Trained Military Officer is utilized for needs of the service. If you currently have a skill set that the Coast Guard is in need of they would run you for that program. I highly recommend you contact your local recruiter which you can find at www.gocoastguard.com and they will have the most up to date information. Good luck.
The last I had heard, the Coast Guard was not taking officers from other branches unless you were an aviator in that service. But always check with a recruiter as the truth changes.
