As an AO your problem is that it's a 100 to 1 that you will be stationed at a NAS, A Carrier, or a Squadron to handle weapons. None of those have rescue swimmers. The squadrons that have rescue swimmers (helo) have very little weapons for an AO to handle. I believe AO is not setting the stage properly to get to rescue swimmer.
You do have options these days. With the Navy moving more toward non-sea going deployments the opportunity for AC(AirCrew) are there. Rescue swimmer may be a stretch but not entirely impossible. If you have the opportunity to go to a squadron then I would reccomend a HSC type. They are doing more work with SOCOM units (Seals,EOD etc.) From there you could get qualified to work as a AC. my roomate from A-School was an AO2(AC/AW)aircrew guy. Swim qualifications may also help. Its up to you.

Yes you can, anything in the aviation rating you can ask your recruiter, but you will have to pass a PST and then you can get reclassified.
