Can someone please tell me the bases that house P3's? My husband is going to re-enlist in the Navy and I was just wondering what bases we may be stationed at. Thanks

P-3s from Rota are moving to Whidbey Island. Patuxent River is not really career enhancing. Try to avoid it for shore duty.

What about VP-65, at NAS Pt. Mugu, Ca. (reserve)

ndilady, thats quite a broad statement. I have seen many-a-fine Sailor(myself included) advance while stationed at Pax River. There is alot to be learned there. If you want to be part of tomorrows Naval Aviation thats where it all starts. Career enhancement has more to do with the individule than the location.

P3's are fantastic for sea duty, but I hope your husband isn't going to a squadron for shore duty!

VP Shore Duty or Sea Duty? What was the difference? The only VP sailors that HAD to go to sea (A Ship) were E-6's that were not going to be Chiefs without actual "Underway Time."

VP-65 decommissioned 3/31/2006.

I have know many E-6s that made chief in the P-3 world without going on a ship, in fact our MMCPO has been in for 26 years....all P-3s

After dealing with 2 stints of "ship's company" with the ASMOD and P-3 squadrons, I prefer the P-3 community to ship's company. Sea duty with a ship was worse than sea duty with a P-3 squadron. I even prefered WTU travel on "shore duty" to a carrier schedule. This is from a wife's point of view. Sgt Mom

What do you mean P-3 Squadron is shore duty. Belive me I would rather be in a P-3 Squadron headed to Japan then my current EA-6B squadron deploying to the ship.

Im sorry, this is a little off topic, but I have tried to search and found nothing. In A school, how are you catagorized into an aircraft platform? How do you pick, or how does the Navy pick which aircraft you specialize in? I am asking here because I want to be attached to a P-3 squadron oversea's somewhere, like Sicily or Japan. Is there anyway of getting better chances of this? My recruiter told me to work my *** off in A school and go for top 10 in my class, then I would have a "first pick of the litter" of orders. Is this true? I just dont understand how this all works, do you get to pick the aircraft and/or duty station, or is it entirely chance(up to the needs of the Navy)? Thanks for the time! Any and all info is apprieciated. P.S. I enlisted into DEP status with AM - Aviation Structural Mechanic, if that makes a difference.

749, The selection of aircraft specific training is done once you recieve your initial orders to the fleet from "A" school. At "A" school you will learn about the basics of being a structural mechanic. Then you will get your orders to a squadron or ship. If you go to a squadron then you will likely be assigned to the line division first. Look for Plane Captain on this board to see what line division entails. Sometime during your assignment at your first duty station, or enroute to it in some cases, you will be sent to NAMTRA for specific aircraft type training. This is considered a "C" school and normally awards you an NEC for that type of aircraft. If you go to a ship you may end up in AIMD and will probably recieve training enroute. As for getting the orders each school is a little different. Some issue each person the orders so there is little flexibility. Others allow the number one student to pick first and then the rest in order of class standing. Do your best at "A" school will only help in the long run. Best of luck.

Lonny, if your response was to my post I think you misread it. Being with a P-3 squadron is not shore duty. I mentioned shore duty in WTU which is part of VP-30 and my husband traveled with WTU all the time. (even though it was "shore duty") Sgt Mom

In response to Pax River, if you go to a VX squadron, you'll be doing alot of traveling. Even back to a ship to do testing on the aircraft you are working on. Not really shore duty if you want to spend time with family. Although I agree, there is alot of experience to gain. Most of the squadrons in Pax work on more than one type of aircraft in one squadron so you have the oppurtunity to experience multi platforms. Good for rating exams.
