Just out of curiosity for any Aircrew Survival Equipmentmen in here, how hard is it for you to get into the Basic Airborne Course at Ft. Benning, Ga? Is it possible that you can get it in your contract or do you request it in A school? And what is the liklihood that you can get it right out of A school? (Excuse my ignorance, I've never been in the Navy)

Why would you think that a Navy PR would go to Basic Airborne? The only time PRs ever jump is if they become test parachutist and this is not a first enlistment job. I also think they are using the Navy contract training now and not Army training.

You need to concentrate on getting in and finishing your first enlistment before thinking about this option it will take a while.

Thanks for the info. I'm not worried about getting in. I'm in the Army and have been for the better part of a decade. My little brother just turned 18 and wants to be a Sailor, I just wanted to get him the info on different rates to make an informed decision. To answer your question, I thought your PRs might get Airborne training b/c our Riggers do and I figured they'd need it if they were going to support SpecWar/SpecOps but I didn't want to assume. Thanks again for the information.

Many Nav Riggers that go the Seal/SpecWar/EOD route have to go to Airborne school regardless if they are on actual teams or support staff. Since there is no more test jumping many have either gone that route or back to the fleet. PR1(AW) USN RET

It has been many ,many years since I was in the navy BUT at one time they sent the trainees to El Centro for navy parachute training then to Ft. Benning for basic airborne school. They came out as Airborne qualified. Some only got the verry basic schooling. They were presented with the five jump chump wings then went back to El Centro. I was reading the qualifacations for navel parachutest badge within the last month. With a few changes it's still done this way.

All my airborne experience is with chutes packed by Army riggers, T-10's and MC-1-B&C's.

Riggers, at least in the Army anyway are required to go to Airborne school at FT. Benning before they can ever become a rigger.

This is mainly due to the fact that if you are an Army rigger you must be willing to jump any chute that you have packed.

If you have never been to Airborne school then how would that work?

For this reason I would have thought that Navy PR's would have been required to go to airborne school as well.

I find this hard to beleive. I'm not saying it didn't happen but, An Army recruiter that was an Instructer at Benning for four years said ,QUOTE, NO way In he__. The one thing they wouldn't do was let someone from another Branch wear Wings unless they earned them. I think your friend was full of crap or not telling the whole truth. I coulf be wrong but I have to beleive what a Master jumper says.Hope you understand.

What is so hard to beleive?

The guy put in a chit, it got approived and he went to Airborne School at FT. Benning, after that he became a rigger in the spec ops community.

That is what I did, I put in a chit and went to airborne school in 1987. I actually went and have the certificate and wings, now gold ones to prove it.

128 jumps, never been hurt, day, night, CE and Hollywood, water and HALO.

I apologise,I took the statement to mean he put in a chit and didn't Jump just got the wings handed to him. That was the basis for my comment about not earning the wings. My mistake.

I suppose it's possible. My cousin who was EO1 EOD tech went to jump school at Benning. Plenty of Marines go to jump school there as well.
