I agree that the BRAC needs to take a step back and really think before they act. I've been married to the Corps since '83 and have seen many changes, both good and bad, but when they close a base, it hurts all involved. When they closed Fort Ord (ARMY) in Central California, it was devestating for the surrounding town. My best friend and her husband lost their business and had to move back to So Cal. They relied on the base for their survival. We not only lost 1, but 2 bases in a 5 sq mile area in So. Cal. MCAS El Toro and MCAS Tustin. Tustin or LTA(Lighter Than Air), as the locals called it, was essential during World War II, as that is where they housed the Blimps that were used for recon. Soon after the war, the President set both hangers as Historical Monuments. We were taught growing up that these weren't going any where and couldn't be touch because of their status. I guess the gents in D.C., don't care about such trivial facts. But I will always keep them in my heart and memories and when I think of those 2 200+ ft. hangers, I will smile, knowing I at least had a chance to see them and remember what they represent. I also agree with the gentleman that said we will be weakened by these closures. I just hope that those pencil pushers in D.C., in their cushy offices, don't ever need to rely on our troops to save their collective hides, cause they and their bases will be History.
