Another definition of a cruise wife is this. It's really a joke. There are a few "ladies" (some men think) who join the Navy just to meet men. And some men who take advantage of their gullibility. They will "pretend" to show simple affections (not sexual at all) to a lady in order to get them to do things a typical house wife might do for them at home. Men have a tendency to hate chores like laundry. Thus they flirt their way into a lonely "cruise wifes" affections to get their civilian clothes laundry done for them. Sad, sexist, but true. It usually doesn't happen, but is joked about. Sailors will say, "man this sucks", while doing house wife type chores, "I need to find myself a cruise wife". It's all a joke 99% of the time.
I've only heard this comment from one sailor in 17 years. He was single and a jokester.

Take it from this Navy Chief, most still do our own darned laundry. Unless the ships laundry is doing it.

"Cruise wife"? In the Marines we call them "Ship girlfriend" You know, they take the place of your wife but they provide you with girlfriend benefits! In my opinion, you should be very concern because he may want to consumate the "ship marriage"! Smile

I dislike people that focus on gender.

Coxmd...the article isn't implying an actual girlfriend; more like some intimate time with your hand.

Either way you slice it, your finding comfort in someone other than your spouse. It's a form of adultery however innocent it may be. After 4 cruises and all the deployments in between, nothing keeps me grounded more than knowing my wife is strong willed; not weak and vulnerable. She is this way because I am the same way as well. Some men and women are brought up to be faithful and others go along with the sins of society.
Sarah, do two wrongs make it right? Just because finding a 'cruise mate' makes you feel better, does it strengthen your marriage...or weaken it?

WOW, That is the crazy! If my husband had to find comfort in anyone(live or image) but me while he was deployed (he is in the Air Force and I am retired Air Force), it would drive me crazy. I agree, if your spouse is thinking in sexual or lustful terms of anyone besides you, it is the same as adultery and it will eventually lead to the real thing. I would ask him about it- ahh communication another great aspect of a good relationship and marriage

"True, we women, as the more evolved and emotionally mature of the species, incorporate a healthy mix of avoidance, distraction, and crying with our girlfriends while eating chocolate cake into our lives. So it is hard for us to understand our husbands and their seeming simplicity."

I'ts true, ladies. Its all true. But remember that when were thinking of our "Cruise Wives" were really thinking of you, we just don't want our buddies to know how unbelievably pathetic we are.

And trust me, a cuise wife - as I know it anyway's - is not an actual person, but like the article says, a symbol for the one were REALLY thinking about. Theres alot of scumbags out there who aren't completely faithful, but trust me, theres plenty who ARE. Don't lose faith in the male gender.

P.S. I don't have a wife, but my girlfriend puts up with a lot. Want to say thanx to all you Military Spouses out there that stick with us. You really do have the toughest job in the service

Isn't it amazing that people have to trivialize a form of adultery? If a married man/woman needs to fantasize of some other woman other than his wife/husband, then maybe he/she married the wrong partner and the person fantasizing might not be as committed as he/she thinks.

“Nobody wakes up one day and suddenly decides to begin an extramarital affair. Infidelity begins in the heart and mind.” David Sanford Author of Infidelity vs. Fidelity: How Did We Get Here?, Focus on the Family.

The amount of divorces I saw while my time in the Navy was very saddening especially when there were children involved. I remember pulling in and having some crewmembers receive divorce papers as a welcome home.
A married person needs to think about his family and put away their immature fantasies and deal with the reality they have chosen. Maybe as a teenager it was cool to plaster all those super model pictures or rock start pictures on ones wall but when you got married you told your partner they were all you ever needed and you need to keep that commitment for the good of your families future.

Jennifer Lopez or whatever “cruise wife” one chooses has no commitment to you and owes you nothing. Some of you who are married owe everything to your spouse. From the care packages to paying the bills and taking care of the kids and taking care of your home. Don't let them down and certainly don't treat them like their not good enough to take on patrol with you and don't treat them like a second choice.

LOL!!!! Okay this cracks me up! So when my husband is deployed for 9 months he better only think of me or it will lead to cheating? HAHA ... we are truely commited to eachother but doesn't mean we are dead! We still look and coment on some movie star we think is hot, look at porn ... h#ll I make sure he has porn while he is deployed!

I know every marriage is different but saying that you think of only your wife/husband always is a load of cr@p. Everybody is human - we look, we "get pictures" in our heads but we DON'T touch! When you start to touch, chat online with real people, or let porn over run your real sex life then it is a problem. What you picture in your head isn't cheating - not in my marriage at least.

Finally!!!! Some sanity in this thread!!

Fantasy is normal, healthy, and dare I say even essential to a "good" marriage.

Besides, any married man (or woman) who claims to ONLY think of his/her spouse while "diddling" him/herself is full of crap! And to equate such activity with adultery is completely and utterly absurd.
