We need a lot more information to help:

1. Was your spouse receiving service connected compensation and if so at what percent?
2. If so, did he die of his service connected disease or disability?
3. Was your spouse receiving non service connected pension?

If it was the third, then you have a choice of working or receiving the small pension. If you can work, then it is advisable to look at that option.

I also suggest you contact a VSO - look around this site and you will find out about VSO/NSO/CSO. DAV, AMVETS, VFW and American Legion are among the groups that offer this free service, along with most states/counties.

They can help you figure it out, and County Veterans offices often have funds to help out those in need.
