My grandfather was in the army/army air core maybe. his records were in the St. Louis fire and havent really tried to get any...He has a bronze star. Anyways he was stationed in SAIPAN during the war and fixed airplanes. were there alot of airbases on saipan cant really find any..it was around the time the first A-Bomb was around. It flew in but wasnt on the Enola Gay yet...anyone know the name of the plane before it....sorry lots of questions....
The island right next door was Tinian but part of the Sipan group. Thats where the B-29's had a major base and the A-bomb launched from. search 20th air force and Tinian. You will find lots of stuff.
The WWII A-Bomb was NOT flown to Tinian. It was transported to the island on the USS Indianapolis (quite a compelling story in itself). Also, the fastest way to find info on your father is to check with the County Clerk office for a copy of his discharge. Many vets (myself included) were told to do this. If unavailable, check with hometown VFW or Legion posts, where in order to join he may have given a copy of his discharge to prove his eligibility.
