Ok so my husband graduates from AIT in 3.5 weeks, then he is getting 14 day recruit, 10 day leave and then reporting in to Fort Bragg. I have contacted housing already and we are waiting on a couple of his papers to file. I was told that I would have to chose the community so I was looking for someone who has lived there that can tell me a good community on post. I have 4 children ranging in age from 1 to 10. I would also love to talk to some spouses that are currently on Fort Bragg. Like most when you move to a new post I know noone there. For any and all information is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.
I would love to just hear from anyone who has ever PCSed at Fort Bragg or if you know anyone who has. I would love to hear the stories. If you liked it or hated it. I want to know everything and anything.
my brother is stationed at pope (so middle of bragg) and he doesnt like the surrounding area. fayetteville he said is a place to stay away from (hes been held at gunpoint and had a knife pulled on him)
he says the base is nice and has alot of facilities, and is a nice easy to drive to alot of good places, being a young guy he likes the drive to murtle beach with his mates on their days off. he also likes that he can drive down to FL in a relatively short space of time.
when my parents visited they liked some of the history thats apparentally not to far away (ill try to get places etc but currentally in PCS mode myself).
I would recommend looking up picerne housing for Bragg and look at the houses they have on post. They have floor plans and pictures of the houses on the outside. Call and ask how many bedrooms you would be able to get considering you have 4 children, and based on that, look up the communities. Also, when you do that, pay attention to the rank. We live in Ste Mere Eglise and it is a nice neighborhood, we like it. I am not personally impressed with Ft Bragg and some areas around Fayetteville are dangerous ( like Skibo road, especially at night. Under any circumstances, do not go into the Walmart there, go instead to the one in Spring Lake). When your DH does the in-processing, everything or most of it will be done in the Soldier Support Center. Tricare is at the hospital. If you can enroll online, do it. If not, you'll have to go to the hospital and enroll there. There are a lot of museums, I think 4 of them just on post. You could live off post, but good areas are far from post, so sometimes it might be a drive for your DH to get into work.Let me know if you have any more questions. Also, a tip that worked for me. You will end up on a waiting list for housing. The day you get here, visit the neighborhood center in the community you chose and ask about housing. We were able to get in a house 24 hours or so after getting here just y doing that, even though on the wait list we were 38 out of 51. You will only be allowed to stay in lodging on post for 10 days. If you have not done so, call and make a reservation, because it is PCS season and a lot of people are coming in or leaving. You will be able to stay in a hotel off post only if they have no availability on post.
We were looking at the Bizaa Ridge communities online. We are getting a 4 bedroom. Do you know how that community is? There is also Bataan community and Pope community that have the quickest availability. Do you know how those communities are? On a different issue I homeschooled my kids last year. I am going to put them into school on post this year. I know that school on post starts August 24th according to the websites. Here in Alabama school starts on August 10. We may not get to post until August 31 so what would you do? I hate the school here because my kids have ADHD, OCD, and Tourettes Syndrome(not that bad) and this school does not like to help out. Should I put them in here and then transfer or wait until I get there? I do not know what would be easier for the kids? Any advice would help. I have 2 that is suppose to go into the 4th grade and one in grade K. We plan on coming to post earlier to look around and look at homes on post bc he is taking a 10 day leave before we get there.
I've only passed them by, so I would not be able to say anything in detail. Looking at locations on map, I see Bataan is close to one of the PX& Commissary but also close to Bragg Blvd, which I would personally stay away from. Biazza Ridge is is on the opposite side of post but close to one of the main roads. As far as the school goes, I don't have kids, so I am not able to give advice. I could look up the school liason phone number and maybe you can call them and ask. Here is the link to mwr services. http://www.fortbraggmwr.com/sls/sls.php
Also, look up the Ft Bragg ACS online and ask for a welcome package. They send them pretty fast and they do contain maps of the installation. I can't seem to be able to find anything about Bataan.
We have 3 boys: 3 mos., 3 yrs.old and one going into fourth grade. We're suppose to report on Aug. 17th. Does anyone know if any of the schools offer education for gifted children,I'd like to get on the housing waiting list for that area. Dyeandwife, with all of our kids,I'm sure we'll run into each other eventually.
it is the Fort Bragg schools site. On this site their is contact information link. Call the number and talk to them about the schools. I have done this about enrolling my kids.
Our plan now is that we will be going to post on August 7 to go look at the housing and get on list.
If you want to contact me via my email it is
mormonmoma@yahoo.com
If I find out any information on the schools that you need I will let you know. I have done alot of research so I have alot of saved links if you would like to see what i have found email me and I will email them to you. Have a good day.
We are on housing wait list. It will be on the 25th day of August before it will be ready. My husbands atrad will be over on August 20th. On the 21st he has a 10 day leave we are having to go to Camp LeJune. My question is when we go to transportation and set up the move if when we get there the housing is not ready what will they do with our stuff? How does that work?

Thanks again for any and all information.
I work in the schools on post in special ed. I would recommend looking at Pope Elementary first, due to the atmosphere of the school. They have a new principal this year, but he's supposed to be very good. My second choice would be Bowley Elementary. I don't know much about the housing. There is a lot of brand new housing on the main post and also in Sanford (Linden Oaks). They will build 2 more schools at Linden Oaks in the next 2-3 years, but the current school there is over-crowded.
Special education and gifted/talented services are available at all schools.
Bring your children's IEPs and other paperwork with you when you come to visit. Since you homeschooled last year, the IEPs would probably be out of date, but they can be accepted under "insufficient information." If you have copies of the most recent evaluations (within 3 years) the school will need those, too. From my understanding, you can enroll your children at that time if you have your housing address.
If you have specific concerns, you can meet with the special education coordinator, Rita Pike, and discuss which school would best meet your children's needs. Her office is at Irwin IS, where the school admin offices are located.
I'm on the on post housing waiting list 9/25 and they said they have a 5 month wait, that housing will be avail until March. IT's good to hear that they might be able to give us housing in 24hr when we get there in Dec. I'm really not looking forward to living off post then move back on post when housing is avail. I guess things might change from now 'til Dec. Keeping my fingers crossed.
