My husband and I are relocating to Korea. The problem is we don't know what to do with my step-son. He is 19 yrs old, and we don't know if we could take him with us. Are there any type of rules for this type of thing? Also I want to take my puppy would that be ok as well? Please someone help?

I don't know about the step-son situation, but I know you can take your pet to Korea. However, if you are going to be at Yongsan, in Seoul, and living on post at Hannam Village, they do not allow pets.
Your pet has to have all current shots and the rabies has to be older than 30 days when you enter Korea, otherwise they will quarantine it until those 30 days are gone.
Check http://www.usfk.mil/USFK/index.html and www.usfkforums.com if you need more info.
You should know that if you live off base, you cannot let your dog run free without a leash.
Good luck

at 19 he is no longer a dependent unless he is a full time college student. as such he will NOT be allowed to live in base housing, nor utilize ANY base facilities. He must give up his ID if he is not a full time college student.

Not sure how it works if he can transfer to a college on base or not. I know our old XO's eldest son had to enroll the minute they arrived( he was already 18 and a HS grad when they arrived) in order to be allowed to stay.

Is there a place to rent in Seoul close to Yongsan and other military families? If we live off base, I would love to live close to other military families. How easy is it to get to base everyday to drop the kids off at school? Any info would help. Thanks

Does anyone know the wait for housing? My husband is a Major who has a command sponsored job and we have with 4 kids. Can't get anything from housing because we can't get orders. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Thanks

There are very few 4 BR in Yoko. NOBODY I knew in Yoko got anything but the minimum required number of BRs. Unless your spouse is an O6( they get 4 BR automatically in the old Imperial Navy Officer housing which is REALLY nice) The waiting list is pretty long across the board for that size home. you will most likely be offered a 3 BR tower unit.. and for my money, I think they are larger than the townhomes. That's what we had and we rattled around in it(of course it's just the two of us)

so far as I know, yes. housing is MUCH more limited OCONUS, because we don't control what kind of housing gets built, the Host Nation does. That's one of the reasons why large families seldom get sponsorship any more.. while I was in Japan, for instance, they stopped allowing anyone with more than 3 kids to come over, and if you were already there, you weren't allowed to stay past your current rotation..

The Navy, at least, has cracked down across the board at All OCONUS locations.. 2 kids. Three is pushing it. Only people in Critical/Hot billets are getting exceptions made.

according to SITES..6-12 Months.. But here's the kicker.. there are a grand total of 18 4 BR units and 5 5 BR units for his pay grade. OCONUS is very strict with the BR policy(children under 6 share, same sex under 12 share)

Unless his job is a Hot fill or comes with a unit, My guess is, you'll be better off renting out in town, otherwise you will be waiting a long time.

Wow!! I didn't know this, don't know that we would have volunteered to go to Yokosuka if we would have known. I just assumed that if we had three kids all 4 years apart that we would qualify for a 4 bedroom. I'm depressed now.

Has anyone moved to Korea with kids? We are an Air Force family moving to Yongsan, S Korea this summer. My husband has a command sponsored position. We have four kids ages 6 months, 2 years, 5 years and 6 years. I need some advice on the long plane ride over, jetlag, housing (on or off post and the wait for on post), schooling, buying or shipping a car, passports, etc. Anything would be helpful. I'm one that likes to plan for everything before major changes. Thank you in advance.

depending on their genders, you may only qualify for a 3 BR unit, and there are more of those over there than 4 or 5 BR units for O4s(see your other post)

get your Tourist passports NOW
it's taking 10-12 weeks for them, and you WILL need them to travel outside of Korea and you are very close to Japan and Hong Kong. In fact it's quite easy to take Space A to both countries. make sure the baby is awake in their picture.

Hello out there. I am moving to Osan in a few months and am trying to find out how friendly the housing market is to dog owners. Does anybody have information on this?

My husband has been in Korea since November. He told me this morning that his higher ups are really trying to talk him into AIPing, which he will not do unless me and our kids move over there which will be NCS. Please give me any advice, comments, suggestions, experiences you have had. TIA

I'd be happy to help you. First click on my name and go to "view recent posts", this will bring you to a ton of threads about coming to Korea NCS. Read through those and if you have more questions, let me know.
