Can anyone chime in on these bases, I am at CATM school right now and want to know which of these bases would be good. I have a family and a child who had Cancer so we need to be near good medical facilities. Any opinions about the area, schools, base housing, SF mission, CATM, deployment rate, ect.

Moody - no - you will be driving to Tallahassee or Jacksonville or Gainesville for specialized medical treatment. My daughter had to see a pediatric endocrinologist and I had to drive to Tallahassee to see the doc. Every 6 mos was not bad - all of the time would have been expensive and time consuming.

Kirtland - maybe - the UNM Cancer Center is affiliated with MD Anderson. I know people go out of town for their cancer care sometimes, and I think it may be because of that affiliation. MD Anderson is a premier cancer center. Base housing was built in 2006 and is very nice. Its the new privatized housing so there is a base housing pool, playgrounds set up so a child does not have to cross a street to get to one, etc...

Don't know about SF but we are CSAR and opstempo at Moody was HIGH. I believe the SF squadron (is it the 820th I think) had a high opstempo too.

I have no idea about Kirtland opstempo -we are on the AETC side here and obviously AETC does not deploy but there are a lot of TDYs.

I think Holloman would be a pass too - Its down in Alamogordo and its a drive to El Paso or Las Cruces and I don't know what the medical facilities are in either of those cities.

While the MTF clinic on Hanscom is rather small and ONLY accepts Tricare Prime patients even ( even in cases of emergency they will not see you if you are on Standard, you have to call 911) Boston has excellent medical facilities. Hanscom Primary is a good elementary school, they were wonderful working with kids with special needs (we left last year). I have children with neurological issues but our neighbor had a son with brain tumors and a friend of mine had children with life threatening allergies and other problems. We all have had good experiences with Boston Children's Hospital and all their adjunct facilities. I was not so fond of the base CDC for various reasons if your child is in that age category and have no experience with the middle school which is also on base.

Hey I was wrong about UNM partnering with MD Anderson. It is Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque that has a partnership for radiation oncology.
