Hi - I have been a lurker and have gotten lots of ideas on places to eat so far, but what about hotels? We will be arriving middle of June - waiting around 3 weeks for housing near Ft Shafter. I have thought of staying at HaleKoa for a week then going to guest house. Also saw that Bellows had cabins which could be neat. Any suggestions on topic would be greatly appreciated. We have three small children 2, 4, and 6...

Also any suggestions on good kennel for our golden retriever mix while we are waiting would be helpful - any in home doggie care places would be the best soln - that is what he is use to.

Thanks so much - I am super excited - never been to Hawaii.

Glenna,

The Hale Koa is booked very far in advance. You could try to get a date, but it is probably already packed considering the summer is prime PCS time as well as other military families from all over the world take vacations there. The Bellows Cabins are nice. I have to caution you aout traffic though, something I don't think you have considered. Traffic in Hawaii is very very bad. Especially during the rush hour. It could take you a good 1 1/2 to get from Shafter to Bellows of the Hale Koa during rush hour. I reccomend you stay at the closest guest housing.

Seriously, I would find a family memeber that your dog could stay with while he waits. There is a state side quarantine program. We did it with our dog. You need to go to the Hawaii agriculture site. Trust me- you do not want to have him quaritined with the state- which is the only people allowed. The conditions are horrible. I can't believe they are even allowed to keep this place open.

Thanks so much - we are doing the 5 day or less quarentine so he could be released right away, but then of course he can't stay with us. So need to find nice place for him to stay. Currently in Northern Virginia so we aren't close to family - although that is still a possibility if I don't find something there...

Thanks for the heads up on traffic - I have heard it is bad - just didn't realize it would be that bad.

With you Army you may need to call Schofield Inn first. That is usually required. If you are moving in the summer you better book now especially June/July because there is an event this summer going on. You can try the Navy Lodge on Ford Island if you are allowed to stay outside of the Schofield Inn.

Actually in the morning traffic might not be bad from Waikiki (Hale Koa) to Ft Shafter because you are going opposite to rush hour traffic. We stayed there and it was quite easy to get to work each morning.

Navy Lodge is a good place to stay and close to Ft. Shafter. It is true that you may need to check with Schofield inn to get a statement of non availability to get your TLA.
Have fun, Hawaii is awesome.

I have stayed at the Navy Lodge, the Lodge on the MCB at K-bay, and in the cabins at Bellows. All were nice, but I cannot imagine spending more than a couple days at Bellows unless you just really, really enjoy the sand and geckos.

I had trouble getting in touch with Schofield Inn when were were on our way out, but that was over a year ago...and hubby is not Army.

Good luck, and try to enjoy your time there. Traffic really is bad, but you will get used to it in time.

haha i was in Hi for 3 years and every time that i heard about rhe traffic in Hawaii and how bad it is i really can't understand..I live in Philly wich is a big city with major traffic issues and close to NYC wich is worst..so driving in Hi is nothing for me.
I don't know maybe is me or something..About the hotels..The inn at Hickam is ok and inexpensive.I agree with the lady about bellows.I love it but i wont stay more than a week. Schofield inn is ok too.
Hale koa even if you see the webpage and say is booked if you call and you say you are in orders arriving to the island they have rooms for people arriving on orders or PCS out of the island. We did it and this was explained to us.
Have fun in Paradise..i loved it and i miss it every day..

Thanks everyone - we are on wait list for Hale Koa, but do have reservations at Schofield anyway. I am so excited and don't think the traffic will be that bad to us - coming from another traffic area DC I95, but at least the beach will be close by and it will be beautiful.

Any suggestions on kennels or petsitters are still welcome.

Also preschools for 4 yr old and daycare for 2yr old? I usually do home daycare until 3, but he is getting close to preschool so may go that route so he doesn't have to change in a year...

Thanks so much. Look forward to meeting you all soon.

Check in to see if the school has a PreK program, some do. I know Red Hill Elementary does and it is one of hte schools for AMR Housing.

Ka'amina Kids I think is another preschool/day care. Has a mixture of local & military kids. They have those all over the place

Looks like my post didn't get transferred from the other thread so here it is again:

"This is my first post, so glad that I found this thread!

Wondering if anyone knows anything about the company grade housing at MCB Kaneohe Bay. Specifically what is the housing area called? I've been looking at the private co's website and it looks like the company grade housing actually at Kaneohe is torn down right now so just looking for some clarification from someone who's actually there. Any help would be really great - hubby finishes the FRS in the next month and then we're taking about 45 days between leave and travel time so we'll likely be there at the end of April."

Thanks everyone - I think we are set. Housing in AMR - max 4 week wait once we sign in. DH is coming first while I visit family and continue to work - that way no long kennel for our dog and kids get to play with cousins for a while. I'll look forward to playing in the surf in middle of July. I'm sure I'll have more questions then.

Does anyone have recommendations on preschools -looking for one with aftercare due to working. I have heard Navy Keike is wonderful. Also any home daycare recommendations for 2yr old?

Can Army apply for Navy housing - I just looked at pictures on Forest City and it looks so much nicer than AMR! Any opinions on it?

Thanks - this site is wonderful.

Glenna, the one good thing about the island is anyone can live in any branches housing. We are Army living on Hickam AFB. I would love to live in Navy housing, but I like living on Hickam.

We left MCB Kaneohe in July 2007, and still have some friends & neighbors who live there in the company grade housing. When we moved there in 2004, the Housing office told us it was being torn down and replaced in two years. That turned out to be untrue and we lived in the same "Capehart" style housing for the whole three years. It is very old and poorly constructed. That said, we lived a block from the beach, so I didn't mind. We lived on base, it was safe, and the weather is beautiful. There was a move toward privatization around the time we left, but I will have to check with my friends who still live there to see if that ever happened.

We called the housing office when we knew we were going there, got a contact person's name, and called her when we arrived on island. We lived in the TLF for three weeks, but by the time we got housing our HHGs had arrived, so it was all good.

Hope this helps.

Navy Hale Keiki is a GREAT school! Best decision I've made for my kiddos. Very family and community oriented. Their curriculum is pretty much a year ahead of all the public schools. Probably the most reasonably priced private school on the island. Both my boys attended preschool and kindergartern there. It's only a couple of blocks away from AMR. Also, AMR CDC has a part-day preschool program.

Just for everyone's info...the Navy Lodge on Ford Island now allows PETS!!!! They have specific rooms set aside for people with pets! You just need to inform the hotel when you make reservations. Great pool, great atmosphere, very quiet, and nice kitchen set-up.
