We are PCS'ing there next year and plan on house hunting in the summer. Where would be some communities to buy a house in. We would want to live close to Fort Sam Houston if possible but an half hour commute wouldn't bother us. I am also looking for a good school district, elementary and high school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Consider living in Schertz TX. There are a number of nice neighborhoods there and the school system is suppose to be good too.

I second dekeoboe's statement. I live in Schertz and have a child who has been in the Schertz, Cibolo, Universial City Indepdendent School District (SCUCISD) for 7 yrs now. The district has been rated superior in both state (one of the best in Texas) and national assessments. I believe we have 3 new elementary schools, two middle schools, one junior high, and one high school that have opened within the last 3 yrs. And because the area is growing so much, an additional 3-4 schools are projected to be built in the next few years. My neighborhood is close enough to both an elementary and middle school that most kids can walk there in just a few minutes.

If you're interested, I can hook you up with a good buddy of mine (retired Chief and now a local realtor) who specializes in this area of town and with military moves.

BTW -- Ft. Sam is only about 15 miles away from Schertz (almost all on the highway). Actual commute time will based upon what gate your entering and time of day. Can range anywhere between 15 and 35 minutes. But I believe it's well worth it.

Schertz, TX is a great community. I have lived there since 2001. I was AD Army stationed at Fort Sam. The drive to Fort Sam is easy... but the drive is starting to get conjested b/c there are so many military in the Schertz area.
Alamo Hts is right there next to Fort Sam (rented there from 99 to 01 while active duty). They call Alamo Hts the 90210 of San Antonio. I like the community but you get less square footage on a house in Alamo Hts than you do in Schertz.. thus the reason I bought in Schertz.
