I am currently schedule to attend "A" in Petaluma during the month of January my wife informed me that i was going to be a father. I was wondering if you get "leave" from "A" school or a 48 hr pass to be present at the birth or if I just have to settle for a family video? Thanks in advance.
First of all congrats, that is some good news. Now I'm not certain about how the school will react to the situation. Of course it may depend on where she is and how far you have to travel to be there, but I can't really see them making a big deal about you missing two days of class to be there with your wife but not much more than that. A lot of information can be passed in a couple days of school so you'd have to work hard to get back up to par with the rest of the class. Again I'm not really sure what they'll do for you if anything at all. They may not let you have time off or they may give you more. I'm just taking a stab at it. Hopefully some of the senior OSs will have more reliable information for you.
Good to see a SN thinking ahead! Brechty had some good info above. A lot will depend on where your wife is now. She will not go to Petaluma with you.
One real life warning, you wouldn't be the first person to miss the birth of their child in the CG, so if you do get to be there, feel lucky. (anyways - you were there for the important part! )
Understanding that babies can not read or follow calendars, about what point in A-School would you expect her to deliver? How far away will she be? How will you arrage to get there? Who will watch out for her through the end of term? Who is gonna drive her to the Hospital? With a new born, how you going to travel from wherever she and the baby are to wherever you get orders?
Think about all of those things too. You may find yourself thinking about putting off A-School for one class if that 'fits the schedule' better. That is a possibility. Sit down with a mentor at your unit and talk about all of those issues - especially if this is your first baby.
Ask your 1st or Chief to look into this for you. It is possible, though I'm not sure probable, they could put you into another class start date depending on the expected delivery date.
Chain of command works wonders quite often. You'd be surprised.
Edit: I'm not sure how but Master Chief's post wasn't there when I posted the above remarks. Though it shows his timestamp as earlier than mine. Odd.

Here at A school we'll generally allow you to make the decision to be present for the birth, however with it will come some minor setbacks.
If you chose to go home for the birth, and the trip home disrupts training you will more than likely be suspended in training when you return and will pick up with the next class where you left off Thereby moving your grad date back appx 3 weeks.
If you chose not to attend the birth, we can usually set up an out of bounds chit for you to head home the first weekend after the birth, with no distruption in training, and you will stay with your class and original grad date.
On a seperate note congrats on the new little one, My wife and I had our first 11 months ago and being a father, although tiring, is the best thing one can experience. Just slightly ahead of a large counter-narcotics bust.
Good luck, and we'll see you when you get here.

Seems like a no-brainer to me, however it depends on where your priorities lie. Again, use the above advice and bring this up to your LPO/Chief. Let him/her earn their pay and come up with some options. I had a similiar situation with the birth of my second, and definatley had to pay my dues after being there for the bith. Semper Gumby.

We had two people in my OS A School class have kids while they were at training and both got to fly home for the birth. Both also graduated on time with the rest of us.
I guess it all depends on the timing (how far along in training you are) and how you match up to the rest of the class (ahead/behind etc.)
