Anyone else see the message that came out this AM for an OS1 Solicitation? I don't want to go into much more detail since the message is not internet releasable. Is this something to look forward to? Or is this a 1 time deal?
This is a normal billet at those units, in that very specific geographic area doing that specific mission. The person slated for that job was not able to meet all of the requirements and so there is a short fuse replacement needed. Huge benifits based on the associated risks and hardships.
This is what I have been waiting for. I need sea time as I wasn't able to get a boat from TC "A" school or my last Group and I'd like to do something different other than work at a Group for a while. I've been to EKMS school and was a primary alternate at my last Group, so I'm hoping that will help. The only thing is that I'm not scheduled to rotate until 2010. =/
FYI, the first message came out w/o the mention of EKMS experience, the 2nd message came out with the additional caveat of EKMS experience being a requirement.
Good luck to those OS1's applying for this great career opportunity! I know one of my OS1 friends that just did the 1 year tour on the Maui and loved it for what it was. It's certainly not a free ride, you'll have to work hard, but obviously the rewards are there for the taking.

OS1 Branning
OS1; When you say "..wasn't able to get a boat..," what did you mean? Did you mean that after putting 4 cutters, all in one class and only in two different cities as # 7-10 on your eresume, you didn't get one of them? Or did you mean you had an eresume listing first every single available cutter in the order you would like them followed by every other cutter, in the order you would like them, before ANY shore unit?
I had mixed feelings when creating that first e-resume. I was notified via e-mail that I was selected as a sea duty candidate and to submit an e-resume mostly of cutters. I submitted what I saw available and some land units that were somewhere close to my fiancee (aside from Juneau) who was, at the time, 2 years from completing her masters program in NY.
I honostly don't remember seeing too many more cutters available for OS2/1 on the east coast at the time I submitted my resume. Also, the Gallatin and Dallas were #2/3 on my list. I only put the west coast cutters so low on the list since I mostly wanted to remain on the east coast. Should I have placed them higher on the list? Sure.
Please don't read that previous post as "the CG screwed me!", I simply meant that I didn't get what I put on the list. No biggie, if I really wanted to get underway I should have put more than 4 cutters on the resume.
I'm still rather pleased of what has come from being on land as far as experience, advancements and achievements goes.
Realizing that in order to perform the most appropriate career counseling, RFMCs have access to data such as EVERY eresume a member has ever submitted, any chance you might want to ammend or clarify that statement?
Feel free to take it over to CG Email if you like.
been there, done that. if anyone has questions i would be more than willing to answer them. i will say a lot has changed. maybe not OS job wise but yeah it's changed. greatest tour i'll have in my career and i've only be in for 8yrs. definitely an experienced OS job. if you've been u/w as a TC/OS then you should be fine.
As with any job, there are multiple reasons for 'lack of success.' They very from medical issues to performance issues. I know of more than a couple that did not successfully complete a tour. Of course, in a combat area, there is a little higher bar expected of people.
I put every single cutter down on my first e-resume, but was not selected. But if my memory serves me correctly, the message from the detailer said only 50% of sea duty candidates get selected for underway billets.
I recieved orders to a cutter from a ship cuz I only had 1.5 yrs of sea time . . . I guess it's all in how you create your e-resume . . . I wish I actually went to it though; my orders were canceled and they sent me all the way across the country cuz I wouldn't obligate time in service

Actualy, you put 11 Cutters down, not all of them, but still fairly reasonable eresume. Where you went just a little bit south is that you didn't have a single priority 4 (or higher) job on the second one. That is a key for folks! Don't want to keep getting the scraps as a priority 5? Ask for Pri 4 jobs if you don;t get afloat!
